Chapter 159-2
“How can you be sure?”
Clas
“Because the beta-hCG numbers are rising perfectly, which tells us the embryo has implanted strongly and is thriving. We’ll do a full, high-definition anatomical ultrasound next week to monitor development, but right now, biologically? This baby is strong
I choke back another sob, my mind still spinning violently in the dark, frantic room.
“But the MRI,” I say. “I was in that MRI machine for forty minutes today… what about the radiation? What about the waves? Did that scan just hurt the baby?”
Dr. Mercer smiles, shaking her head. “An MRI does not use ionizing radiation like a CT scan or an X-ray does, Zara. It uses strong magnetic fields and radio waves, which are safe during pregnancy when clinically necessary. Your baby was not harmed by the scan today.”
“What about my body?” I whisper, the rawest, darkest fear finally tearing its way out of my throat. “My body is weak, it’s broken. I spent months losing weight, losing my hair, throwing up, lying in bed feeling like my organs were burning up. My immune system was destroyed. How can a body that could barely keep me alive carry a child to term? What if my body fails this baby the same way it failed me?”
The panic in my chest is an absolute inferno now, consuming every rational thought. My lungs feel compressed, my vision spotting at the edges as hyperventilation threatens to pull me under.
Before I can spiral any further, a massive, warm force shifts beside me.
Locke moves.
He doesn’t just shift in his seat. He surges forward, his massive frame blocking out the lights, the desk, and the rest of the world. In one fluid, powerful motion, he reaches out with both of his hands, cupping my burning face and forcing me to look directly into his eyes.
‘Zara. Look at me.”
His voice isn’t its usual calm, low steel. It’s vibrating with a dark, primal intensity, a raw wave of emotion that commands my full attention. His broad thumbs press firmly against my cheekbones, wiping away the hot tears pouring down my face.
“Look at me, baby,” he says again. “You are not broken. You hear me? You are the strongest fucking human being I have ever seen in my life. You fought a battle that would have put ten grown men in the dirt, and you came out standing on your own two feet.”
“Locke, I’m scared -”
“I know you’re scared, but I’m right here and I’ve got you. Your body isn’t going to fail. You survived the poison, Zara. You beat the dark. You’re alive, you’re healthy, and if this doctor says our baby is strong, then that baby is in the safest damn place on earth right now… inside you.”
He shifts his heavy grip, taking my left hand and pressing it flat against his broad chest, right over his heart. I can feel the thunderous, steady, unyielding rhythm of his life beating against his ribs, sending a grounding pulse through my frozen fingers.

Feel that?” he whispers. “That heart beats for you, and it beats for whatever little goblin is growing inside you You are not doing this alone – you are never going to be alone again. I’m staying right here, guarding both of you every second of every day.”
I let out a ragged, trembling breath.
Dr. Mercer watches us quietly for a moment, then she slowly closes the beige file on her desk and stands
“I’m going to step out for fifteen minutes,” she says softly, her voice carrying a maternal warmth. “I need to print out the official lab documentation, write up your specialized prenatal regimen, and clear the schedule for your ultrasound next week. I’ll leave you two alone to talk, process, and just breathe.”
“Thanks, Doc,” Locke says without taking his eyes off me, his voice rough and deep.
Dr. Mercer gives my shoulder a light, reassuring squeeze as she passes the table. “You’re going to be okay, Zara. Your body is doing something miraculous. Trust it.”
The heavy door clicks shut behind her, plunging the room into a loaded silence.
