“Zara! There you are, girl!” Jade chirps, leaning over the counter with a bright, radiant smile.

“Jade, you look incredible!” I say, genuinely admiring her. “Seriously, show-stopping.”

“Oh, sweetie, I know,” Jade winks, giving a dramatic, slow pivot that makes her emerald dress shimmer under the kitchen lights. She reaches up, gently brushing her hair back to make sure the diamonds catch

the light. “Mayhem nearly went blind when I walked out of the bedroom tonight. Man almost dropped his drink.

“Those earrings are gorgeous.”

“Right?” Jade beams, her eyes sparkling with delight as she touches the shimmering diamond. “Mayhem c ompletely outdid himself this year. He handed me this velvet box on Christmas morning, trying to play it all cool and tough like, ‘Here, found these at a shop.’ Found them? Please! The man went straight to a high-end jeweler… and that’s not even the best part.”

“There’s more?” I ask, playing along, although I know all about Hawaii. But I’m getting such a kick seeing how happy she is. “Like what?”

Jade leans over the counter, her voice dropping to an excited, loud whisper. “He bought us a two-week trip to Hawaii for February. Maui, Zara! Full oceanfront suite, private balcony, the works. He said he wanted to take me somewhere warm where I didn’t have to wear anything more than a bikini and his leather vest. And a smile.”

I burst out laughing. “I cannot picture my brother sitting on a beach with a tiny pink umbrella drink.”
