Feeling the festive spirit, I throw back the rest of my flute in one easy, confident motion, setting the empty crystal glass down on the counter with a satisfied sigh.
Jade blinks at my empty glass.
“Look at you, speed racer! Alright, well, you clearly need a refill, and so do I.” She turns toward the counter, reaching across the marble toward the ice bucket. “Where’s the bottle?”
“Oh! I’ve got it, don’t worry -” I say quickly, taking a fast step forward to grab it myself, but Jade is already closer.
Her hand slides right behind the tall knife block, grabbing the slender green neck of the bottle I’d just hidden. “Found it! See, I’m useful -”

I freeze in place, my hands resting flat on the marble top, caught entirely red-handed.

“Jade, keep your voice down
“Oh my God,” Jade whispers, her hands flying to her mouth, the bottle clutched safely in her side arm. Her eyes instantly fill with sudden, emotional tears, ker wide smile breaking through her shock. “Oh my God. You’re pregnant!”
“Quiet,” I laugh-whisper, looking frantically over her shoulder toward the living room where Dad and Mayhem are near the fireplace. “Please, Jade.”
“You’re pregnant!” Jade squeals in a harsh, frantic whisper, grabbing my forearms and jumping up and down in her high heels, her diamond earrings swinging wildly. “Oh my sweet lord, you are actually pregnant
!”
“Yes… yes, okay, I’m pregnant!”
Jade throws her arms around my neck, pulling me into a fiercely tight, hugging squeeze.
“I am so goddamn stupid… I should have known the second I walked in tonight. You’ve been glowing for weeks, your skin is absolutely radiant, and you’re looking so soft and pink and curvy. I just thought you were relaxed from Maine, but you’re making a whole baby.”
