se the ladies room and buy the scones, and then instead of walking back out the front doors into the main gravel lot where the biting winter wind is whipping across the open road, I head toward

the café’s side door.

It opens onto a hallway that leads directly out to the side parking area where I left my car. It’s a

short, convenient cut-through, and it will get me within twenty feet of my car when I exit.

As I walk down the quiet hallway, a profound, almost overwhelming sense of gratitude washes

over me. Sitting across from Willow, watching her genuinely smile for Locke and me, proved that

the final broken piece of my family has mended.

Locke and I are strong. My body is healthy, vibrant, and thriving. And in just a few months, we’ll be holding our tiny baby in our arms, surrounded by a club that would do anything needed to keep that

child safe.

I am loved. I am secure. I am home.

A light, breathless laugh escapes my lips at the sheer, miraculous weight of it all. I pull my scarf a

little higher around my neck, sliding my hand into my coat pocket to grab my phone. I send Locke a

text:

Meeting went amazingly well. Willow was so sweet and is happy for us. I’m walking to the car now

and heading straight home. Love you.

I hit send. The little blue bubble pops up on the screen, indicating the message delivered. I slide

the phone loosely back into my open coat pocket, open the side door, and step outside.

The cold air hits my face instantly, crisp and smelling heavily of damp earth, pine resin, and wet

asphalt. The side street is shadowy and quiet, thoroughly shielded from the sinking afternoon sun

by the tall, dense wall of evergreen trees bordering the property. My car sits just a few steps away,

gleaming under the pale winter sky.

I take two steps toward my vehicle, my boots making a soft, solitary crunching sound against a

patch of road salt.

And then the absolute peace of my day shatters into violent, chaotic motion.

A shadow lunges out from the dense tree line to my right with terrifying speed.

Before I can react, a massive, iron-hard forearm lunges out of nowhere, snaking brutally around my throat and jerking my head backward with horrifying, neck-snapping force.

The air is instantly cut off from my lungs. Panic flares through my chest like a lightning strike – a

blinding, white-hot surge of pure adrenaline that obliterates every trace of my previous joy.

My survival instincts kick into overdrive, every nerve ending screaming in primal terror, not just for my own life, but for the tiny, fragile eleven-week life growing beneath my heart.

“Get her legs! Move, move, move!” a harsh voice barks right beside my ear.

I open my mouth and try to scream, but the words come out as a strangled, desperate rattle

against the crushing pressure on my windpipe.

I lift my hands, clawing wildly at the thick leather jacket of the man holding me, trying desperately to tear his arm away from my neck. My heart is hammering so hard against my ribs it feels like it might burst. I drive my elbow backward with all the strength in my upper body, connecting solidly

with his ribs.

The man grunts in pain, but his grip doesn’t loosen. Instead, he violently shifts his hold, dragging

me backward toward the black utility van that’s pulled up silently into the shaded alley, its rear

sliding door thrown wide open like a dark, gaping maw.

“Don’t kill her, you fucking idiot!” a voice snarls from inside the vehicle. “Knox wants her breathing.”

Knox.

The name hits me like a bucket of ice water, sending a paralyzing jolt of sheer terror through my

veins. He found me. Despite the security, despite the protection, despite the illusion that

everything was finally safe… he was waiting in the dark.

“Get away from me!” I rasp through my constricted airway, twisting my body frantically, kicking my legs to prevent them from lifting me off the pavement. I throw my whole weight to the left, trying

to break his grip. “Let go!”
