the chaotic, violent struggle, my arm catches on the café’s exterior wall. I fight with everything I have, thrashing, twisting, trying to create enough noise for the barista inside to hear through the solid, thick brick.

My arm snaps viciously against the wall, and the force violently tears my custom silver cuff bracelet from my wrist. The heavy silver band clatters loudly against the ground, bouncing into the snow-dusted gutter along with my phone, which slips from my pocket and lands face-down in the icy slush.

“Grab her hands!” the man holding me roars, his voice laced with sudden panic as I kick him hard in the shin, managing to get away for a few seconds. “The bitch is fucking fighting me!”

A second man steps directly into my path. The sheer physical aggression in his movement leaves

no room to breathe.

CRACK.

Without warning, his thick, heavy palm strikes the side of my face with sickening force.

The blow snaps my head violently to the side. Pain explodes across my left cheekbone, sending a blinding shockwave straight down my neck. White sparks dance across my vision, and a deafening

ring fills my ears.

The raw, brutal shock of the slap paralyzes my muscles for a fraction of a second, my knees buckling as the world tilts dangerously sideways.

“Don’t knock her out yet!” the first man growls “Just fucking hold her!”

Before I can recover, a second set of rough, heavy hands grabs my wrists, pinning them brutally behind my back, wrenching my shoulders until the joints scream in agony. Every thought inside my

head collapses into a single, frantic prayer:

I can’t let them take me. I can’t let them hurt my baby.

I thrash my torso, twisting my hips violently, trying to stomp down on the man’s instep.

“Hold her head still!”

A thick, foul-smelling rag drenched in a sweet, heavy chemical substance is slammed brutally over

my nose and lower face. The hand presses down over the cloth, crushing my lips against my teeth and sealing off the cold air entirely.

I clamp my jaw shut, holding my breath with every ounce of willpower left in my body. I throw my

head wildly from side to side, trying to break the seal of the cloth, kicking out viciously with my boots until my feet connect with the second man’s knee.

curses loudly, driving a heavy fist into my stomach – not full force, but enough to shock my system, shock me to stillness as I realize that if he keeps hitting my stomach, then I’m possibly

moments away from a miscarriage.

No. No, no, please, God, no- my baby – not my baby-

The blinding, overwhelming panic causes my lungs to spasm. My body betrays me, forcing a

sudden, deep, involuntary gasp of air.

The sweet, nauseating chemical fumes rush down my throat and deep into my chest.

Instantly, an icy, suffocating darkness explodes behind my eyes. The chemical burn’s hot in the back of my throat, sending a sickening wave of vertigo flooding through my brain./My vision shrinks to a pinprick of pale winter light, fading rapidly into a heavy, swirling abyss.

“Got her. Load her in! Go, go, go!”

The men’s coarse voices, the rustle of the pine trees, and the loud, idling roar of the van warp and

stretch, melting into a distant, hollow echo.

My strength vanishes completely. My limbs go limp in their iron grip, my head rolls back against the man’s shoulder, my body has no strength and no form.

The last things my fading consciousness registers are the sensation of my body being tossed

brutally onto the cold floor of the vehicle, the heavy door slamming shut with a final, deafening thu

d, and the violent roar of the engine accelerating as we hit the highway.

Then, absolute darkness.
