Chapter 217-1
+25 Ports
I wake up slowly, the silence of the master bedroom wrapping around me like heavy velvet.
For a few long seconds, I lie completely still in the dark, watching the faint patches of silver moonlight shift across the white ceiling.
The penthouse is so quiet you can hear the faint siren of the city thirty stories below.
As I stare up into the shadowy darkness, my mind drifts.
I think of Becca.
She’s out there somewhere in the night, carried away by the wreckage Knox left in his wake.
As far as I know, she fled the moment Knox fell, running terrified into the shadows to protect herself and the baby she’s carrying – Knox’s child. A baby who will grow up without a father, born into chaos, debt, and the ugly, lingering stains of a dead man’s sins.
A sharp pang of sympathy pricks at my heart.
Knox was a monster to me, but Becca was caught in his web, too. She was manipulated, and trapped in his sphere of control, believing whatever lies he fed her.
Yes, she helped him cheat on me, and she was horrible and hateful to me every chance she got, but she was desperate to win and then hang on to Knox. I know that desperation, that place that you can get to with the wrong man.
And now she’s alone, pregnant, and probably terrified, trying to navigate a harsh, unforgiving world with no safety net, no home, and no one to protect her. I remember how Knox used to isolate people, how he made you feel like the entire world outside his thumb was hostile and fake.
She’s probably sitting in some hotel room right now, staring at a door, waiting for a blow that’s never going
to come.
I know that feeling all too well – the sheer terror of sitting in a dark room, jumping at every creak of the floorboards, convinced that the man who broke you is coming back to finish the job.
Life ahead of her is going to be brutal. It’s going to be an uphill battle every single day just to keep a roof over her head and food on the table for her child.
I lie there in the dark, watching the shadows stretch across the room, realizing I can’t just let her drown. Knox’s legacy might be poison, but that innocent baby doesn’t deserve to suffer for the sins of its father.
I make a silent promise to myself right then:
In the morning, I’m going to talk to Rook and Byte. I’ll have them use their digital network to quietly tra Becca down – not to harm her, not to confront her, but to set up an anonymous trust.
A quiet, monthly stipend from Knox’s liquid assets that will make sure she and her baby have a safe place to live, warm clothes, and a real chance at a clean, peaceful life far away from this city.
She deserves a fresh start.

I try to close my eyes, trying to settle back into the quiet warmth of the bed, but sleep has completely abandoned me. My mind, is whirring now, spinning from the thought of Becca out in the cold, to the cold reality of the war waiting for us at dawn. The air in the bedroom feels thick, almost heavy, pressing down on my chest until staying still feels impossible.
Carefully, inch by inch, I ease Locke’s heavy forearm off my waist. I hold my breath as his brows knit together slightly, his chest rising in a heavy inhale, but he doesn’t wake. He just lets out a soft, low sigh, his fingers curling into the empty sheet where I was lying seconds ago.
I slide my legs out from beneath the duvet, the cool air of the room biting at my bare skin.
A soft, velvety nose nuzzles against my ankle.
I look down to see Xena looking up at me through the dim light, her oversized German Shepherd puppy ears fully erect, her tail giving two muted thumps against the rug. Her dark eyes gleam in the shadows, instantly alert the second my feet touch the floor.
