“Well,” I say. “Vane’s whole power dynamic with Grit relies on money and legal deniability.”
“Huh?” Mayhem says, as Xena c***s her head at me, ears flopping, looking equally perplexed.
“English for the dumb brother who barely finished high school, Zarabug.”
“Okay… what I mean is, Grit provides the muscle, Vane provides the cash and clean corporate
shield through his partnership with Apex Logistics. Right now, Vane thinks he can protect his
multi-million-dollar lab with Grit’s guys guarding it. But I own the land. I own the warehouse.”
“Riiight,” Mayhem says slowly. “I’m with you so far.”
“So we hit them legally first. We have Byte file an emergency hazardous materials injunction
for the warehouse.”
“We tell the court that something toxic is in your warehouse?”
“Exactly. As the owner, I say how worried I am about it, and that triggers a containment
protocol.”
“So it gets raided, the drug lab is found, and I guess the feds or whoever take everything?
Shut the whole place down?”
“Yep.”
Mayhem frowns. “But that leads to a pretty big problem.”
“Which is?”
“Well,” he says. “A court filing takes days to move through the system, Zara. Judges drag
their feet, clerks lose paperwork, and red tape moves like molasses. We want that lab wiped
out, not sitting in paperwork limbo on some clerk’s desk while lawyers argue motions for the
next three months.”
“But we aren’t waiting for a judge to rule,” Locke cuts in, realization dawning on his face. “We
just need the filing to enter the system. Right, baby?”
“Exactly,” I say, nodding firmly. “Vane’s name isn’t on a single document that ties him to Apex
Chemicals or the lab. On paper, he doesn’t exist. Publicly, no court is going to send him a
notice about his drug supplier being swarmed by cops and feds.”

“I’m lost again,” Mayhem says dolefully. “I just don’t get it.”

“Vane didn’t build a multi-million-dollar cartel network without insurance. There is no way
that he doesn’t have people on his payroll in the municipal clerk’s office. He has clerks and
administrative assistants who flag high-value filings for him.”
Dad’s eyes narrow, a dark, dangerous grin splitting his face as he catches the play. He turns
to Jade.
