Chapter 234-2

“Then do it,” I say softly

I don’t shift in my seat. I tilt my head, letting a cold, sharp smile touch my lips… the kind of smile my father uses right before he ruins a man.

“If you had the evidence, Detective Sergeant Miller, you wouldn’t be sitting in my father’s office trying to intimidate me. You wouldn’t be shouting at Jade, and you certainly wouldn’t be wasting your afternoon making speech after speech.”

I pause, look him up and down.

“You’d have federal warrants, tactical units, and handcuffs. But you don’t have any of that, do you? You have cold leads, a bunch of burned–out trucks, and a captain at headquarters breathing down your neck for results before the news channels make him look incompetent.”

Miller’s breathing turns heavy, his chest heaving under his rumpled shirt, his jaw grinding so hard I can hear his molars clicking in the quiet room.

“I know Knox is dead because someone executed him,” I continue. “I know nothing else about that, and I certainly have no statement to give you regarding the Grinning Skulls. Now, unless you’re placing me under arrest right here and now, you’re currently harassing an innocent citizen.”

“Innocent?” Miller spits with a bitter, barking laugh. “There isn’t an innocent soul in this entire goddamn building. You think your father’s iron patch is going to protect you? You think you can play society girl while riding on the back of a gang? 1 know how your kind operates. You think you’re untouchable because you have money and guns.”

He leans down, placing both hands flat on the desk/bringing his face inches from mine. His eyes are bloodshot, laced with broken red veins, and his foul breath smells of old tobacco, cold coffee, and stomach acid.

“I’m going to be outside,” Miller whispers, his voice dripping with venom. “Day and night. My units are going to sit on every exit of this building. You won’t be able to buy a pack of gum without an officer standing behind you. And the second one of you makes a misstep… a single broken light, one tiny slip… I’m going to lock the whole damn family away for life.”

“Make sure your boys bring warm jackets,” Jade calls out sweetly, not moving an inch to get out of his way as he approaches the door. “It gets real drafty sitting in unmarked cars all night, watching better people live their lives.”

Miller glares at her with pure, unadulterated hatred, his jaw working silently before he shoves past her so hard his coat sleeve clips the frame.

A heavy, suffocating quiet settles over the back office. The air feels greasy, tainted by his presence. Dad and Mayhem step out from the shadows of the side corridor, their expressions darker than the room itself. They look like men standing on a sinking deck, calculating how long they have before the water hits

their throats.

“Unmarked cruisers just pulled up at both ends of the parking lot,” Mayhem reports. “He wasn’t bluffing.

Chapter 234-8

They’re setting up a full perimeter. Tactical units down the road, patrol cars idling at the main strip.”

Dad walks over to the desk, looking down at the empty space where Miller was sitting, his thick fingers tracing the gouges in the oak. “He’s wrapping the noose. He knows the city is bleeding, and he wants to squeeze us until we pop. He thinks if he sits on our necks, he can catch us in the middle of something.”

“We can’t move heavy guns with Miller sitting on our doorstep,” Mayhem says, rubbing the back of his neck in frustration. “Every patch–holder who leaves this building is going to have two squad cars on his tail within fifty feet. We can’t even run a shipment of beer without getting searched.”

“Then we don’t move heavy guns,” I say quietly, standing up from the leather chair and smoothing down my top. “We move smart.”

It’s what I can’t see that terrifies me.
