I smooth the back of my silk emerald dress, letting the fabric cling to the curve of my waist before falling in a fluid, sharp line down my thighs. My hair is swept up into an immaculate, effortless chignon, every stray strand tamed.

Crimson lipstick – bold, precise, blood–red–coats my mouth. Beneath the thick layer of designer concealer, my skin is pale, and deep within my almost–flat belly, there’s an empty, hollow ache where my baby used to be.

Knox is dead. Shot down like a dog in front of me. My child is gone, bled away on a bathroom floor

Vane sits at the private corner booth on the elevated mezzanine, framed by tinted glass that

overlooks the entire room.

He isn’t wearing leather or cut–offs, he doesn’t have chains or studs. He wears a dark charcoal Italian suit, no tie, the top two buttons of his crisp white shirt undone.

Knox was an MC President. He ruled by crude fear, loud shouting, fists, and sudden, messy violence. He was effective, but he was a blunt instrument.

Vane is cultured, educated, impeccably spoken, and terrifyingly polished. He can quote European literature in three languages while executing a man in cold blood without getting a single drop of crimson on his French cuffs.

That intelligence makes him infinitely more dangerous than Knox ever was. And it makes him the
