Re found a sanctuary with the Skulls, built not on blood ties, but on shared grease, freezing night.
runs, and fierce, protective loyalty.
I remember watching him work on a stubborn fuel line last summer, his wrench slipping and scraping his knuckles raw against the chrome. He instantly froze, flinching as if expecting an
immediate outburst, only for Mayhem to step over, drop a clean rag into his lap, and calmly walk
him through how to angle the tool for better leverage.
Spoon looked up at him as though Mayhem had just given him the keys to the world. Moments ke
that were everything to a boy who had spent his whole life being told he was in the way.
A cold tear slips down my cheek, catching the dim morning light before I quickly brush it away with
the back of my hand.
Spoon was just beginning to breathe. He was just learning what it felt like to have brothers
standing at his back. And Grit and Vane’s bullets ended all of it in a split second of violence.
My hand tightens around the edge of the marble vanity. Down in the dark dry–cleaning facility,
Locke is still trapped, holding out against Vane’s interrogation while we prepare our strike.
It cuts through me like a physical blade that Locke isn’t here today to stand shoulder–to–shoulder
with his brothers, to lay his gloved hand on those caskets, to ride in the front column for the men
he swore to protect.
Every second that ticks by feels heavy, almost unbearable. I can picture Locke in that awful, cold
building right now… his body bruised, his eyes fierce, refusing to give Vane a single inch of ground.
He’s taking the brunt of that isolation in the dark while we walk under open skies, relying entirely on
the trust we’ve forged between us. The sheer weight of his absence makes the air in my lungs feel
thin and shallow.
‘Hold on, Locke‘, I think, sending the thought out into the gray rain–slicked city. ‘We’re going to bury our brothers, and then we’re coming to tear down the walls that hold you‘.
I walk out into the living room, Xena trotting at my heels. The elevator doors slide open, revealing
Mayhem and Jade standing inside.
Mayhem looks formidable and heavy in a formal black dress shirt buttoned to the collar beneath his pristine, heavy leather cut. His broad shoulders are set in a grim, rigid line, his eyes are blacker
than I’ve ever seen them.
