The atmosphere inside the private rear courtyard of the Grinning Skulls clubhouse is dense,

somber, and thick with the heavy scent of freezing rain and burning sage.

This hour belongs strictly to the club. It’s a private, closed ritual carved out of iron and blood that

the Skulls have carried out for over forty years whenever a brother falls.

Twenty men stand in a wide, tight semicircle around two raised wooden trestles set in the center of the brick courtyard. Rain falls in a steady, fine mist, glistening against dark leather jackets,

soaked denim, and the heavy silver skull rings worn on thick fingers.

Nobody holds an umbrella. Nobody shifts their boots.

On the left trestle rests Brick’s heavy, custom leather vest. The leather is dark, weathered, and scarred from decades of highway dust and rain, its back patch proudly displaying the skull and cross–wrenches. Laid carefully across the chest of the vest is his old brass knuckle knife and his original, faded colors.

On the right trestle rests Spoon’s vest. It looks almost brand new compared to Brick’s, the leather still stiff, the white embroidery of his prospect–turned–patch letters sharp and unmarred. Beside it sits his motorcycle helmet, painted with a small, stylized wooden spoon he drew on it the week he

patched in.

My father stands at the head of the semicircle, flanked by Mayhem and Rook. His face looks. carved out of gray granite, his eyes fierce and bloodshot, but his posture straight as a rod.

He steps forward, his heavy boots echoing off the wet bricks. He carries a small, heavy bronze bowl filled with smoldering sage and cedar chips, the white smoke curling up into the damp

morning air.

“Harrison ‘Brick‘ Taylor,” Dad says, his voice booming across the courtyard, deep and resonant. “Forty years on the road. Brother. Soldier. You stood when the storm hit, and you held the line when

the dark came.”

“HE HELD THE LINE!” the patched men roar in unison, their voices striking the courtyard bricks with terrifying, beautiful power.

Dad moves to Spoon’s trestle, his expression softening with a profound, aching grief.

“William ‘Spoon‘ Gentry,” Cobra says. “Nineteen years of youth. You gave everything to this table before you even got to see your twentieth winter. You earned your patch in blood, and you ride with

the ancestors now.”

“mon nails” forged from melted engine parts of retired club bikes.
