Chapter 241-2

“No, Dad,” Daisy says, her voice loud enough to carry across the quiet graveyard. “I’m not

getting in the car.”

“Daisy, please…” Mrs. Gentry begins softly.

“No, you guys aren’t listening!” Daisy turns to face her parents and grandparents. “You keep

saying he was dragged into that world, and you keep saying they corrupted him… but you

didn’t see him. You don’t know.”

Mr. Gentry frowns, stunned by his daughter’s outburst. “Daisy, what are you talking about?”

“Spoon was happy,” Daisy says, explicitly using her brother’s club name with fierce pride. “Spoon was happier with the Skulls than he ever was sitting at our dinner table being told he was a disappointment. Do you know what he told me three weeks ago when he picked me up

after school and took me for dinner?”

Her parents stand frozen, unable to speak.

“He told me that for the first time in his life, people actually listened to him. He told me he found brothers who had his back no matter what. He was proud of his patch, and he worked so hard for it. And you guys stand over his grave and act like his life was a mistake just

because you didn’t understand it.”

She turns back to me, wiping her eyes with her sleeve.

“I want to go to the wake, Zara. I want to see how Spoon lived when he was happiest. I want to meet the people who made my brother feel like he actually belonged somewhere.”

Mr. Gentry looks at his daughter, utterly speechless. “Daisy… you can’t go there alone…”

“Then come with me,” Daisy pleads, looking back at her father with desperate eyes. “Please. Dad. Just for an hour. Don’t leave him behind like this. Let’s go see who Spoon really was.”

For a long, painful moment, the only sound in the cemetery is the falling rain tapping against

the umbrellas.

Mr. Gentry looks from his daughter’s tear–streaked face to the line of dark–coated men standing quietly near the distant tree line – men who stood through hours of rain in absolute

silence out of respect for his son.

He looks down at the lowering vault in the earth, his shoulders finally slumping as the last of

his anger drains away, leaving only the honest, aching bond of a father’s love.

He lets out a long, ragged sigh, wrapping his arm around Mrs. Gentry’s shaking shoulders.

“Alright,” Mr. Gentry says, looking at Daisy. “We’ll go.”

An hour later, the main hall of the Grinning Skulls clubhouse is transformed.

The heavy oak tables are covered in crisp dark linens, laden with dozens of hot dishes,

platters of Willow’s fresh sourdough, roasted vegetables, hearty soups, and carafes of wine

tire.
