The Unwanted Attention I

The abbey’s infirmary had been transformed into a war zone.

Iva moved through the chaos with mechanical precision, her hands trembling as she followed the nuns’ instructions. She cleaned wounds, applied bandages, and handed over supplies with a speed

that surprised even herself. Her heart was pounding so loudly she could hear it in her ears, a frantic drumbeat that seemed to echo the urgency of the moment.

She didn’t want to be here.

Every instinct screamed at her to run, to grab Youssef and flee into the forest, to put as much

distance as possible between herself and these hunters who spoke of her kind as abominations.

But she couldn’t.

She had to keep up appearances. She had to play the role of the grateful, helpful young woman

who had been saved by the nuns. Any suspicion, any hesitation, could be her undoing.

So she worked.

She cleaned the blood from a hunter’s arm, her hands steady despite the nausea churning in her

stomach. She applied pressure to a wound on another’s leg, her fingers pressing against the torn

flesh while the man groaned in pain.

She didn’t look at their faces.

She couldn’t.

Because if she looked, she might see the hatred in their eyes. The contempt. The cold, ruthless

determination to destroy everything she loved.

The massive man from last night-Rauno, Sister Ophelia had called him-lay on a cot near the back

of the room. His arm was wrapped in a blood-soaked bandage, his face pale beneath the grime

and sweat. Despite his injuries, his eyes were sharp, alert, watching everything that happened

around him.

Sister Ophelia moved to his side, her expression grave.

“What happened, Rauno?” she asked, her voice low and urgent.

Rauno grimaced, shifting on the cot as he tried to find a more comfortable position. His voice was rough, thick with pain and anger.

“They sensed us before we got the chance to attack,” he said, his words clipped and bitter. “This time, they had lycans in their ranks. We fought with everything we had, but we never expected the

lycans to be there. Our intel was outdated. We weren’t prepared.”

Ava’s hands froze for a split second, a cold chill racing down her spine.

*Lycans.*

The same word that made her stomach churn with a mixture of fear and confusion.

She forced herself to keep working, her movements automatic, her face carefully neutral.

Around her, the other nuns and hunters listened in grim silence. The weight of Rauno’s words hung

in the air like a shroud, heavy and suffocating.

“We need more weapons,” Rauno continued, his voice hardening. “Potions. Silver. Everything we

can get our hands on. These abominations are extending everywhere. They could be anyone anyone at all-hiding in plain sight. We need to reveal their true nature. We need to stop their

spread.”

He paused, his eyes blazing with cold, fanatical determination.

“We need to eradicate them.”

Iva’s breath caught in her throat.

Her hands, which had been reaching for a roll of bandages, stopped mid-air.

She could feel her heart pounding, could hear the blood rushing in her ears. The words echoed in her mind, sharp and brutal, cutting through the noise of the infirmary.

*Eradicate them.*

*Abominations.*

*Lycans.*

She forced herself to move again, to pick up the bandages, to continue her work. But inside, she

was screaming.

She had to get out.

1 She had to get Youssef and run.

Because if they ever discovered the truth-if they ever learned that her son was half lycan, that she was a wolf, that she was the very evil they were determined to destroy-they would not hesitate.

They would eradicate her.

And her son.

Sister Ophelia’s voice cut through her thoughts, calm but firm.

“We will do what needs to be done, Rauno. We have always done what needs to be done. The

Lord’s work is never easy, but it is necessary.”

Rauno nodded, his expression grim.

“I know, Ophelia. I know.”

The infirmary was slowly emptying as the injured hunters were tended to and moved to more comfortable quarters. Iva finished her last task-rolling a bandage and placing it on the supply table-and turned to leave, her body aching with exhaustion and her mind reeling with fear:

She had to get back to Youssef.

She was almost at the door when a hand shot out and grabbed her wrist.

Iva froze.

Her heart leaped into her throat, and she turned slowly, her eyes wide with terror.

Rauno was looking up at her from his cot, his grip firm despite his injuries. His dark eyes were fixed

on her face, an unreadable expression flickering in their depths.

“Thank you, little bird,” he said, his voice low and rough. “For your help.”

Before she could respond, he released her with a groan, his hand falling back to his side.

Iva didn’t wait.

She bolted from the room, her footsteps echoing in the corridor, her heart pounding so hard she could barely breathe.

She didn’t stop until she reached her room and closed the door behind her.

In the days that followed, Rauno became an unexpected presence in her life.

He was everywhere-in the corridors, in the dining hall, in the garden where she took Youssef for fresh air. He would appear seemingly out of nowhere, his tall frame blocking her path, his dark eyes fixed on her with an intensity that made her skin crawl.

At first, she tried to ignore him.

She would nod politely, murmur a quick greeting, and hurry away. But he always found a reason to engage her a question about the abbey, a comment about the weather, a request for her help with

some small task.

Each interaction stretched her nerves to the breaking point.

What if he suspected something? What if he had noticed something about her that marked her as different? What if he was trying to trap her, to expose her, to destroy her?

One afternoon, she found Sister Ophelia in the garden, tending to the roses. The old nun looked up as Iva approached, her expression warm and knowing.

“Iva, my dear,” she said, her voice gentle. “You look troubled. Is something wrong?”

“I’m just… tired,” she said, forcing a smile. “Youssef has been restless at night.”

Sister Ophelia nodded sympathetically.

“It’s hard, being a young mother. But you are strong, Iva. You will get through this.”

She paused, her eyes glinting with a knowing light.

“Speaking of strength,” she said casually, “I noticed that Rauno has taken a liking to you.”

Iva’s blood ran cold.

“I don’t know what you mean,” she said, her voice careful.

Sister Ophelia smiled, patting her arm.

“Rauno is a good man, Iva. A bit rough on the outside, perhaps, but he has a kind heart. He has been through so much-lost his wife and child to the evil we fight. He has been alone for a long

time.”

She paused, her expression softening.

“I think he sees something in you. Something special. He could be a good thing for you and your

son.”

Iva felt the world tilt beneath her feet.

A good thing?

Rauno was a hunter. A man who had sworn to destroy creatures like her. A man who would kill her son without a second thought if he ever discovered the truth.

And Sister Ophelia was suggesting that he could be a good thing?

“I don’t-I can’t-” Iva stammered, her voice barely above a whisper.

Sister Ophelia patted her arm again, her expression benevolent.

“Just think about it, child. That’s all I ask. Being a single mother on the long run is not easy.”
