The Truth II
Caleb remained standing across from Iva, watching her struggle to make sense of the photographs still trembling between her fingers.
For a moment, neither of them spoke.
Then Caleb finally said the words that would change everything.
“We are fated mates, Iva.”
She stared at him.
“What?”
“We are fated mates.”
The photograph slipped slightly in her fingers.
Eva shook her head, almost immediately rejecting the words before her mind could even process them.
“No.”
“It is the truth.”
“How do you know?”
Caleb’s eyes remained fixed on hers.
“Because I know.”
Her breathing became uneven.
“But Nick is my mate.”
Caleb’s jaw tightened, yet his answer came without hesitation.
“Yes. I will not lie to you. He was … once.”
Iva stared at him in disbelief.
“Was?”
“You decided to step away from him.”
The room seemed to tilt.

Iva opened her mouth, but nothing came out.

She looked down at the photograph again, then back at Caleb, desperately searching his face for the deception she was certain must be there.
“You are saying I left my mate?”
“I’m saying you chose to leave Nick.”
“Why?”
“Because you knew he wasn’t the person you were meant to spend your life with.”
Iva shook her head.
“I don’t remember that.”
“I know.”
The simplicity of his answer unsettled her more than an argument would have.
Caleb gestured toward the chair.
“Sit down, Iva.”
She remained standing for another moment before slowly lowering herself into the chair.
Her hands were trembling now.
Caleb walked back toward his desk and rested both palms against its surface, giving her the space to breathe while he gathered the courage to tell her what she had forgotten.
“You and I didn’t meet because of an accident,” he began quietly. “We didn’t fall into each other’s lives by chance.”
Iva stared at him.
“You were my mate.”
His voice softened.
“You still are.”
She looked away.
Caleb continued.
“There were things between us that neither of us could explain at first, but eventually there

was no denying what we were.”
Iva swallowed.
“What things?”
“Love.”
The word landed heavily.
“Trust.”
Another pause.
“A life.”
Iva’s eyes burned.

She did not understand why hearing him describe a life she could not remember made her feel as though she were grieving something she had never known existed.
Caleb watched her face carefully.
“You loved me.”
Iva immediately looked at him.
“No.”
“You did.”
“I don’t.”
“I know.”
There was no accusation in his voice.
That almost made it worse.
He was not demanding that she believe him.
He was simply telling her what he remembered.
Caleb reached into the drawer again and placed several photographs on the desk.
He did not push them toward her.
He simply let them remain there.

Iva’s eyes moved toward them.
“Those are all us?”
“Some of them.”
She stared.
There were photographs of different places, different clothes, different days.
In every one, she was beside Caleb.
Sometimes they were laughing.
Sometimes they were standing close together.

In one, Caleb was looking at her rather than the camera, and the expression on his face was so unmistakably tender that Iva had to look away.
“This cannot be real.”
“It is.”
“You could have made them.”
“I could have.”
Iva looked at him sharply.
Caleb did not deny it.
“But I didn’t.”
She lowered her gaze.
Her mind felt like a room where someone had opened every drawer and thrown everything
onto the floor.
Nothing had a place anymore.
The hunters.
Nick.
The castle.
Caleb.
Youssef.

The photograph.
The strange feeling of safety she could not explain.
And now this.
Fated mates.
A life together.
Love.
She pressed her fingers against her temples.
“I don’t understand.”
“I know.”
“Stop saying that.”
Caleb fell silent.
Iva’s breathing became faster.
She looked at him with eyes already filling with tears.
“I don’t believe you.”
His expression softened.
“It’s too much.”
“I understand.”
“No, you don’t.”
Her voice broke.

“You have no idea what it feels like to have someone tell you that your entire life is different from what you remember.”
Caleb remained silent.
“You are inventing all of this,” she continued desperately. “You want to mess with my head. You want me to believe that I loved you, that I belonged here, that this was my home.”
“I don’t want anything from you.”
“Then why are you doing this?”

“Because you asked me for the truth.”
Iva shook her head.
“I don’t know what is true anymore.”
Caleb looked at her for several long seconds.
There was no anger in his eyes now.
Only a longing that seemed almost painful to witness.
“Look, Iva.”
She slowly met his gaze.
“I know it’s a shock for you.”
His voice was quieter than before.
“I don’t know what what he did, or what anyone did to you for you to forget us.”
Iva’s expression changed.
“Us?”
“Yes.”
Caleb’s eyes moved toward the door.
“But I would like you to meet someone.”
Iva frowned.
“Who?”
“Someone from your past, someone you could talk to.”
He pointed toward the door.
A soft knock came from the other side.
Caleb did not take his eyes from Iva.
“Come in.”
The door opened.
And a young woman stepped inside.

Iva froze.

The woman had long red hair that fell over her shoulders, familiar eyes, and a face that seemed to pull at something buried deep inside Iva’s mind.
For one suspended second, Iva could only stare.
The redhead stopped when she saw her.
Her lips parted.
“Iva?”
The sound of her name shattered something.
Iva’s breath caught.
She did not know this woman.
At least, her conscious mind told her she did not.
But her body knew.
Her heart knew.
Something inside her recognized that voice with a certainty stronger than memory.
“Lori…”
The name escaped her lips before she even realized she had spoken it.
Lori’s eyes immediately filled with tears.
“Iva.”
Iva stood so quickly that the chair scraped against the floor.
The photograph fell from her fingers.
She did not care.
She did not think.
She simply ran.
Lori barely had time to open her arms before Iva crashed into her.
They held each other with a desperation that neither woman could explain, and Iva buried her face against Lori’s shoulder as tears finally spilled freely down her cheeks.

“Oh, my God,” Lori sobbed. “You’re alive.”
Iva clung to her.
Something was returning.
Not everything.
Not clearly.

But enough.
A school corridor.
Laughter.
Late-night conversations.
Secrets whispered between two girls.
A friendship that had once felt unbreakable.
Fragments flashed through her mind so quickly that she gasped.
“You were my friend,” Iva whispered.
Lori pulled back just enough to hold Iva’s face between her hands.
“I was your best friend… and still am.”
Iva stared at her through tears.
Best friend.
The words struck deeper than anything Caleb had said.
Because this woman did not have a reason to fabricate the photographs.
She did not have a reason to invent a shared childhood.
She had looked at Iva and cried before anyone had explained anything.
Iva turned slowly toward Caleb.
He was standing exactly where she had left him.
His expression was unreadable, but his eyes had softened at the sight of the two women embracing.

Iva wiped her tears with shaking fingers.
Her world had just changed again.
Caleb had promised to tell her the truth.
She had believed she could reject it.

But now Lori was standing in front of her, holding memories that Iva could feel somewhere beyond reach.
And suddenly the most frightening question was no longer whether Caleb was lying.
It was how much of her own life she had forgotten and what was the truth.
