The Inferno
As soon as they entered her room, it started as a flicker-a small, insistent flame in the pit of
Iva’s stomach that she tried to ignore. She sat on the edge of her bed, her hands clasped
tightly in her lap, her breath coming in short, uneven gasps.
The room was silent, save for the pounding of her own heart, the rush of blood in her ears,
the desperate, clawing need that was building inside her with every passing second.
The heat spread.
It moved through her body like wildfire, igniting every nerve ending, every cell, every fiber of her being.
Her skin flushed a deep rose, her pulse raced, and a strange, aching emptiness settled deep in her core. She pressed her thighs together, trying to ease the sensation, but it only made it worse. The friction sent a jolt of pleasure-pain through her, and she gasped, her fingers curling into the sheets.
The desire pulsed in her chest, a living thing that pulled at her, tugged at her, demanded that she follow it to its source.
Caleb.
His name was a prayer on her lips, a desperate plea that she couldn’t contain
He was close.
So close.
And every fiber of her being screamed for him to come back, to hold her, to ease the fire that was consuming her from the inside out.
She rose from the bed, her legs unsteady beneath her. She crossed the room and pressed her forehead against his hard chest.
“Caleb,” she whispered. “Please.”
Caleb stood in front of her, his chest was heaving, his hands clenched at his sides, and his eyes-those dark eyes that she had seen in her dreams-burned with a fire that matched her own.
Iva’s breath caught in her throat as she looked at him.
Every nerve in her body screamed for him, reached for him, craved him with a hunger that
bordered on madness. She could smell him-that intoxicating manly scent that made her
head spin and her knees weak.
“You should go,” she whispered, even as her body betrayed her, swaying toward him. “You should leave before-”
“Before what?” He stepped closer, his eyes never leaving hers. “Before I lose control? Before I do something we both regret?”
Iva shook her head.
“I don’t want you to go,” she admitted, her voice trembling. “I know I should. I know this is the heat talking. But I can’t-I can’t stop wanting you. I can’t stop needing you.”
Caleb closed his eyes, a shudder running through his body.
“Iva, you don’t know what you’re asking. The heat-it makes you say things you don’t mean. It makes you want things you wouldn’t want if-”
“I want you,” she interrupted, her voice stronger now. “I may not remember everything, but I know what I feel right now. I know what I want. And what I want is you.”
For a second he froze in shock as her raw confession settled in his mind.
She reached out and touched his chest, her fingers splaying against the solid wall of muscle beneath his shirt. He was so warm, so strong, so utterly, devastatingly male. She could feel his heartbeat beneath her palm, rapid and urgent, matching her own.
Caleb groaned, a low, guttural sound that vibrated through her entire body.
“You’re going to be the death of me. I am holding with everything I got. I don’t want to take advantage of you just because of the heat,” he muttered.
“I believe that we established that I am the one taking advantage,” she replied smiling.
