The Messenger( Iva) novel Chapter 67

Uneasy Silence-1

His voice carried quiet finality,

“… because you will stay here.”

The words landed with the weight of a command – not loud, not forceful, yet impossible to ignore.

Iva blinked.

Stay… here?

Her throat tightened, but she forced the question out before fear could swallow it.

“What? Why?”

What type of answer is this? she screamed inside her head.

Her voice was small, but steady enough.

“And for how long?”

For a heartbeat, something unreadable moved behind his eyes – calculation, restraint… hesitation?

“Two weeks,” he answered at last.

Her brows drew together, until the realisation hit her.

“Until the full moon?”

A small nod.

“When we will know if I am telling the truth,” she finished softly, while a pang of disappointment hit her

chest.

Despite forcing herself not to expect anything, it seems that this bond was messing with her and her emotions big time.

Another nod.

The confirmation sent a ripple through her chest – part relief, part dread. Two weeks suspended between uncertainty and revelation.

Two weeks living under the same roof as a man who could shatter her life with a word.

Two weeks near her mate.

The thought alone made her pulse stumble.

Caleb turned away slightly, as if the conversation had already concluded.

“I will show you a guest room.”

Simple. Practical. Controlled.

He began walking, expecting her to follow and she did, though her mind spun in restless circles.

The penthouse corridor stretched long and quiet, lined with dark stone and soft light. Every surface looked untouched, perfect, impersonal. Nothing about this place suggested warmth or comfort.

It felt like a domain.

A controlled environment.

A place built for someone who trusted nothing and no one.

She wondered suddenly how often another living soul crossed this threshold.

Caleb stopped before a door and opened it without ceremony.

The room beyond was elegant but restrained – a large bed, clean lines, muted tones, a window overlooking the city.

Safe.

Temporary.

She stepped inside slowly, uncertain where to stand, what to say, what this arrangement truly meant.

Behind her, Caleb remained near the doorway.

Not entering.

Not leaving.

Watching.

Silence stretched again, thick with unspoken questions.

Iva turned toward him.

“Thank you,” she said quietly.

Not because she understood.

Not because she trusted the situation.

But because she recognized something she could not name something that had pulled him into this decision as surely as it had dragged her into his car.

For a fraction of a second, something shifted in his expression.

Then it was gone.

“You will not leave the penthouse without informing me,” he said evenly. “Food will be arranged. Security is active. No one enters without my permission.”

Instructions.

Boundaries.

Control reasserted.”

She nodded.

Her fingers twisted-tightly together, betraying the storm beneath her calm surface.

Caleb studied her one last time and in that moment, the mask slipped just enough for truth to breathe.

This had not been planned.

When he had told her to get in the car… it had not been strategy.

It had not been calculation.

It had been instinct.

Impulse.

Something raw and ancient that even he had not anticipated.

He had not expected to bring her here.

Had not intended to place her under his protection.

Had not chosen this.

And perhaps that unsettled him more than her presence itself.
