Patricia replayed the memory in her mind and, sure enough, it all came back to her. That was it. Andrew had spent that whole evening trailing behind Shirley, stuck to her like glue.

“Patricia?”

Shirley noticed that Patricia was watching her and nervously swallowed, her voice barely above a whisper. “I’m Shirley, Charlotte’s friend.”

Patricia had always liked girls who were sweet and well-mannered. And if Shirley was close with Charlotte, there was no doubt her character was solid. That seemed to calm Shirley a bit. She had expected Patricia to be strict or intimidating but, instead, she was so kind and warm.

“Yes, of course,” Shirley replied with a gentle smile.

Charlotte jumped in, nodding toward the other girl beside her. “She’s my friend from childhood,” Charlotte explained.

“Hello, Patricia,” Stella said, giving a small nod as usual and speaking softly.

“Hello, hello,” Patricia replied, her face lit up with joy. But as her smile lingered, a quiet sigh slipped out. If only she had one more grandson.

Before leaving, all the younger folks walked Patricia to the lobby downstairs. Right before getting into the car, Patricia glanced back at Shirley, her face joyful and gentle. The more she looked at her, the more she liked what she saw.

“Alright, go ahead and have fun,” Patricia called out. She didn’t want to make Shirley uncomfortable, so she had kept her comments simple.

As the sports car drove away, Charlotte finally turned her gaze away, shooting Shirley a look with a small, knowing grin.
