“Please just focus on your work.” Anthony’s voice was sharp, a hint of irritation creasing his brow as he caught the doctor sneaking glances at him.
The doctor quickly ducked his head and got back to treating the wound. Bloody gauze piled up in the trash, each piece landing with a soft thud.
Anthony pressed his lips together, his eyes deep and unreadable. There was a chill around him, a shadow on his handsome face that made the whole room feel colder.
“If it hurts, you can bite me.” He took Charlotte’s right hand and leaned in close, his whisper soft against her ear.
Charlotte looked at him and smirked, brushing it off. “It’s just a scratch. I’ve dealt with much worse before.”
Her easy tone made something inside Anthony sink. He went quiet for a few seconds, then leaned in, close enough that it felt like it was just the two of them. His voice was low and a little rough, like he was trying to scold her but couldn’t quite pull it off. “That was before. Now you have a boyfriend. You’re supposed to let him take care of you.”
Charlotte’s heart skipped. Warmth rushed through her, leaving her almost dizzy. Why did he sound so hurt, like she was the one letting him down?
A sudden sting shot through her hand. Normally, she would have ignored it, but this time she glanced up at Anthony, her voice soft, pretending to be delicate for once. “It kind of hurts.”
Jackson, standing off to the side, could barely keep a straight face. For Charlotte, this was nothing. Acting fragile just wasn’t her style.
The minutes ticked by. When the doctor finally finished, he wrapped her hand up with fresh bandages.
