As soon as he finished speaking, he looked up and spotted Charlotte standing at the entrance of the emergency room, watching him quietly.

“Keep her locked up,” Anthony said, waving for Charlotte to come over. When she reached his side, he leaned in and spoke softly, “Tell Melissa the driver already confessed. Let her stew for a few more hours.”

He wanted Lottie to deal with Jesse first.

Once he’d given his orders, Anthony gently took Charlotte’s wrist. His eyes lingered on her pale face, and his voice shifted from icy to warm. “Come on.”

Charlotte followed him without protest, thinking he was taking her home or maybe to the police station to handle Melissa. She only realized where they were when the car pulled up outside the Cabinda Psychiatric Hospital.

Anthony got out first, his face serious. Without saying anything, he took her hand and led her to the entrance.

Charlotte trailed after him, feeling her face go even paler. But when she looked up, she caught the sunset casting a golden glow over Anthony’s features. In that light, he looked heartbreakingly beautiful. With him by her side, even the hardest things seemed a little easier.

She smiled just a bit and edged closer to him, almost unconsciously seeking comfort.

Inside, a staff member led them straight to an isolation room. Charlotte already knew who was waiting behind that door.

Right before they went in, Anthony let go of her hand. He brushed her hair back from her forehead, smiled, and whispered, “I’ll wait for you out here. Remember, even if everything falls apart, I’ll always be here for you.”

Charlotte’s heart skipped a beat.

She squeezed his fingers, stood still for a moment, then pushed open the door and walked inside.

As the door closed behind her, Anthony lowered his head. Under his messy hair, his eyes shone with worry and tenderness.

After today, nothing from her past would ever haunt her again.
