Solenia.
The plane touched down on the private airstrip at the presidential estate. Franco held Nora close as they both watched the exit, nerves written all over their faces.
As soon as the cabin door opened, Nora’s whole expression lit up. She slipped out of Franco’s arms and rushed forward, barely holding back tears as she threw her arms around Charlotte, hugging her tight.
“Lottie…” Her voice broke and she held on even tighter.
Nora could walk now, but she was still frail. She coughed quietly, the sound barely there.
Charlotte frowned, concern flickering across her face. She handed her bag to Adonis, shrugged off her coat, and wrapped it around Nora’s shoulders. “You’re looking better,” she said with a warm smile. “I can tell you’ve been eating.”
Nora gripped the coat, eyes searching for more familiar faces. Only Jackson and Adonis followed behind.
“Lottie, did you come back by yourself?”
“Anthony had something to do. He didn’t come.”
So he didn’t come… Nora pressed her lips together. It felt strange, somehow.
Charlotte glanced up as the wind picked up, her lashes fluttering. “It’s chilly. Let’s go inside and talk.” She paused, then gave Nora a bright look. “Mom, I heard you have a present for me.”
“Yes, yes, let’s go see your gift.” Nora’s excitement was impossible to hide.
The moment they reached the villa, Nora grabbed Charlotte’s hand and led her straight to the main hall.
“Lottie, these are from your dad and me. We hope you’ll like them.”
Charlotte’s touch was gentle. “The treatment is working. Finish this round of medication, and then we’ll try something new.”
“Lottie, do you think I’ll really get better?” Nora’s voice was hesitant. She looked at Charlotte carefully, searching her face. “There won’t be any more complications, right?”
She was trying to find out if Charlotte knew about the genetic mutation.
Charlotte smiled and sat at the edge of the bed, meeting her mother’s gaze. “You’ll be fine. It’s just been going on for a while, so it’ll take time to recover.”
So, Charlotte didn’t know about the mutation. Nora relaxed, her voice barely above a whisper. “Lottie, you’re really leaving tomorrow?”
Charlotte nodded, her expression serious. “I have classes to get back to.”
Nora looked down, disappointment flickering across her face. As much as she wanted her daughter to stay, she didn’t want to hold her back. And she needed time to find a cure, before Charlotte ever had to face the same illness.
