Only a few feet away, Xavier leaned against the wall. A cigarette rested between his fingers, its cherry glowing a bright, aggressive orange.
At his feet, a scatter of crushed butts formed a thin layer of ash over the floor.
It looked as though he hadn't slept a wink, standing guard outside Sterling's door the entire night.
"It's nothing. Just passing through."
When Xavier looked up, his eyes were threaded with red veins, making him look even more haggard than Sterling felt.
"Are you sure you're okay, Xavier?" Sterling asked, genuine concern lacing his voice.
Xavier's gaze shifted, locking onto the dark shadows under Sterling's eyes.
"Overindulgence will catch up with you eventually," he remarked, his tone completely unreadable.
Heat rushed to Sterling's face. He knew his lack of sleep had given his brother the wrong idea entirely.
Clearing his throat, he feigned a helpless smile. "I couldn't help it. Elena was just so incredibly needy. She kept me up all night."
The cigarette in Xavier's hand burned down to the filter, the ash tumbling onto his knuckles and sparking a brief, stinging pain.
"How many of those condoms did you use from the box you took from my room?" Xavier asked abruptly, the implication heavy in the air.
Even with their tight bond, Sterling found the question wildly inappropriate. It crossed a definitive line.
"That's strictly between Elena and me, Xavier. I'd appreciate it if you stayed out of it."
At that, Xavier lowered his eyes, flicked the cigarette butt to the floor, and ground it out with the heel of his shoe.
"Pace yourself, Sterls. There's no need to rush these things." He paused, a dark thought flashing through his mind. "And your girlfriend has an injured hand. You really ought to be more considerate."
Sterling frowned. Coming from anyone else, this would be highly offensive, but he knew Xavier meant well.
"Her hand doesn't get in the way of what we do in bed. Besides, I'm young and full of stamina. A little indulgence won't hurt." Sterling clapped a hand on Xavier's shoulder, dropping his voice to a consoling whisper. "Look, if you're struggling to perform, you should really see a doctor. Don't let pride ruin your health."
