For a split second, Xavier genuinely entertained the idea of locking Elena away in a gilded cage.
But just as quickly, the twisted thrill in his eyes flickered out. "If I do that, having her wouldn't even be fun anymore."
The reality was, he knew exactly how stubborn Elena was. If he actually imprisoned her, he would be crossing a point of no return. It would obliterate whatever lingering feelings she might still harbor for him.
All that would be left in her heart would be pure hatred and disgust.
Lawrence couldn't understand why Xavier cared if it was 'fun' or not, nor did he care to ask. If his brother wasn't going to take the most efficient route, it wasn't his problem.
Switching topics, Lawrence asked, "I heard Sterling brought a girl home?"
"Alistair is out of the country right now. Could you run a background check on her for me?"
Xavier's face darkened instantly. "Don't bother. They won't last."
He sneered, adding, "With her background, she's absolutely no match for our family. She and Sterling have no future!"
"But if Sterling brought her to the estate, it means he's serious about her."
Even though Lawrence was entirely devoid of romantic emotion, he had a massive soft spot for Sterling and rarely denied him anything.
"As long as she doesn't hurt him, her background is irrelevant."
Xavier didn't reply. He couldn't admit that his true motive was completely selfish—he didn't want Elena's status as Sterling's girlfriend to be legitimized in the family.
"I have the situation under control. Just stay out of it."
Xavier stared down at his ruined hand. The mixture of water and blood had soaked through the bandages, creating a chaotic, sickening mess.
"Fine. My current project is critical. Stop letting your emotions interfere with my work."
Lawrence hung up immediately.
Xavier gripped the phone, his mind replaying his humiliating attempt at seduction from the night before, and how utterly indifferent Elena had been.
Were she and Sterling truly in love?
If they were...
He couldn't touch her until they broke up.
But the thought of her parading her affection for Sterling right in front of his face was absolute torture!
And the worst part was...
He still couldn't figure out what went wrong. When he had pretended to be poor, she had happily paid for everything. She had never once looked down on him.
