"What's so weird about that? Maybe it's just a kink."
Nadine immediately chimed in as she stepped into the room, desperate to cut the gossip short.
Xavier shot her a sharp look. He recognized her as the maid who had suggested Sterling dress Elena earlier.
"Why are you so certain they're even a real couple?" Xavier demanded.
Nadine offered a nervous, placating smile. "You're joking, Mr. Hawthorne. Master Sterling brought her to the family estate and treats her like absolute royalty. How could they not be together?"
That was not the answer Xavier wanted. He scoffed harshly. "Anything is possible!"
As he spoke, his gaze drifted and locked onto the trash can.
Without a second thought, he crouched down and plunged his hand straight into the bin.
The maids gasped in shock. Nadine panicked. "Mr. Hawthorne, what are you looking for? Let us do it! You'll dirty your hands!"
Before she could even finish her sentence, Xavier pulled his hand back out.
Clutched in his grip was a small, square box. An entirely unopened box of condoms.
"I knew it."
Staring at the untouched plastic wrapping, a low, dark chuckle ripped from Xavier's throat.
It was the exact box Elena had taken from his room.
Last night, when he had put on that humiliating outfit to seduce her, he had fully intended on taking her right then and there. That was why he had the box ready.
If Elena and Sterling were truly together, if they really had spent the entire night going at it like rabbits, why was the box completely untouched?
The puzzle pieces finally clicked into place.
"It's a fake. The whole relationship is a goddamn lie. She isn't his girlfriend at all!"
The realization hit him like a shot of adrenaline. He stared at the box, his laughter echoing through the room, growing louder and more unhinged by the second.
"Nadine... is he... is he okay?"
Watching the volatile man laugh maniacally at a box of condoms, Cynthia grabbed Nadine's arm, terrified.
Nadine shook her head, completely lost, signaling for her to stay quiet.
Deep down, she couldn't help but sigh. Ever since his girlfriend dumped him, Xavier had been growing increasingly unpredictable. Now, he seemed entirely out of his mind!
