“Fine, fine. I guess I’m the sore loser.”
Xavier let out a soft scoff, the corners of his eyes tinged with red, revealing a hint of lost composure.
Elena didn't say anything else, and a heavy silence filled the bathroom.
“Break up with my brother.”
Xavier broke the silence. In a short amount of time, he had reeled in all his emotions, returning to his usual arrogant self.
“Sterling is young, and you’re just a passing novelty to him. You two aren't from the same world. You need to cut your losses with him, too.”
As his words fell, Elena looked up to see the tall man casting a dark shadow over her from just inches away.
“Babe, my brother isn't like me. You shouldn't mess with him.”
Moving her gaze upward, she saw his cold, sharp eyes looking down at her, every word a reminder and a warning.
“You won’t marry into the Hawthorne family through him. He can’t protect you.”
Contrasting the Xavier who used to cater to her every whim, this dangerously intense Mr. Hawthorne gave Elena a strong sense of dissonance.
Sure enough, a wolf in sheep's clothing was still a wolf to the bone; its vicious nature couldn't be changed.
The fake, poor boy persona was long gone. This ruthless face was the real him!
“Then I’ll wait until he can’t protect me to break up with him.”
Elena curled her lips, feigning a touch of sweetness. “I believe that no matter what happens, he would never hurt me. So, please don’t worry about it, Mr. Hawthorne.”
“Fuck!”
Xavier couldn't help but curse, the emotions he had managed to suppress instantly shattered by the girl.
“When you were with me, you were never this obedient!”
Resigned, he bent down to be at eye level with the girl sitting on the bathtub. “Babe, what’s so good about a clueless kid like him? Does he know how to serve you like I do?”
Elena tilted her head, unable to read his mind for a moment. “What, is Mr. Hawthorne trying to steal his brother’s girl?”
She couldn't imagine how many people had stared at him that day, or how he had managed to get out of it.
“Knock, knock, knock.”
Fortunately, a knock on the door interrupted the tension.
Sterling’s voice rang out. “Elena, are you done washing up?”
Elena couldn't wait to escape this disaster zone, but Xavier grabbed her ankle.
“Babe, tell me... if Sterling saw us like this, would he break up with you?”
She lowered her eyes and caught the deep malice surfacing in the man’s gaze. “If I told Sterling that you intentionally seduced me, do you think... he’d believe his brother, or you?”
-
Sterling had finished his shower and waited for a good while, but Elena still hadn't come out.
During that time, he opened his group chat with his buddies, all of whom were asking for updates.
