Elena frowned slightly, slowing her words as she calculated her response. "Mr. Hawthorne? He's obviously an exceptional man. He wouldn't have had so many girlfriends otherwise. It's clear women are drawn to him..."
"I'm asking how you feel about him," Sterling interrupted flatly, his patience wearing thin. "Is he your type?"
"No, no, absolutely not! I feel nothing for him. I purely see him as your older brother!"
Elena denied it fervently, without a second thought.
Was he joking?
Her momentary lapse in judgment was the only reason she had ended up with a psychotic ex-boyfriend like Xavier in the first place.
With her best friend's help, she had packed up overnight just to shake him off, only to stumble right back into his orbit by a cruel twist of fate. It was stressing her out beyond belief.
And Sterling was asking how she felt about Xavier?
She felt absolutely nothing but the desperate need to stay far away from him.
Knowing Sterling wouldn't ask out of nowhere, Elena felt a headache coming on. "Master Sterling, please don't tell me you think I'm hitting on him again. I swear, I really, really, really didn't try to seduce him..."
"I know you didn't."
This time, Sterling's demeanor shifted, his tone turning bone-chillingly cold. "This time, it's his problem."
Elena looked up at him in genuine surprise.
Sterling continued, his voice calm. "Elena, I told you before that Xavier has high standards, that he's picky and still hung up on his ex. I might have been wrong."
As she stared at him in confusion, his tone darkened. "It seems my brother isn't picky at all anymore. He's much more... open-minded than I thought."
Though she couldn't fathom why he was saying this, Elena recalled something and murmured, "But Mr. Hawthorne said he never slept with any of his ex-girlfriends..."
"What, you actually believe he never touched them?"
Sterling frowned, looking her up and down. "Never trust a man's words. They'll say anything to get a woman into bed. It's just meaningless barking."
"Pfft... cough, cough!"
