She shook his arm frantically. "Please, Master Sterling! I just want to stay by your side and be your loyal employee. Please, please don't give me to him!"
By the end, her voice was practically choked with desperation.
Only then did Sterling finally look up, a faint smirk curving his lips.
He reached out and flicked her forehead lightly. "Well, when you put it that way, you are quite smart."
Elena rubbed her forehead, still on edge. "So... does that mean you won't hand me over? Even if you know he wants me, you'll protect me? You won't let him touch me, right?"
The last question carried a subtle, probing edge.
"Yeah. Since you don't want to go, I won't force you."
Sterling said casually. His eyes dropped to the hem of her skirt, and he reached over to pull it down slightly, barely covering her knees. "From now on, dress more conservatively around my brother."
Sensing his phrasing was a bit awkward, he cleared his throat into his fist. "I mean, like yesterday. Whenever you see him, make sure you're fully covered, understood?"
"Yes, completely understood."
Elena nodded eagerly, completely on board with that rule.
She's so obedient, Sterling thought unexpectedly. Then, remembering something else, he continued, "I told you before that Xavier nearly died over a girl."
At his words, the image of the faded scar on Xavier's chest flashed through Elena's mind.
