True to Sasha's word, as the afternoon bled into the evening, the sky darkened, and not a single soul walked by.
Inside the room, the fading light gave way to shadows.
Elena was a bit afraid of the dark. She found a spot to sit, pulling her knees to her chest and curling into a tiny ball.
"Ms. Larkin—"
Suddenly, she heard Lorelei's voice. Her eyes lit up instantly, and she called back in a rush, "I'm in here!!!"
"Ms. Larkin, why are you locked in there? This is an abandoned archive. Apart from the occasional person walking by during the day, no one ever comes here at night. It's way too dangerous for you to be in there alone!"
Lorelei rambled as she tried to open the door, only to discover a fresh padlock. "Did someone lock you in? Who would do this? That's so messed up!"
Elena walked to the door and gave her a brief rundown of what had happened.
"I knew Sasha had something to do with this! She's definitely terrified of you since you hit her last time, so she came up with this dirty trick to get back at you!"
Lorelei fumed, her expression anxious. "I can't get it open without a key..."
She paused, her eyes suddenly brightening. "I'll go find Sterling and have him come rescue you!"
The moment she said it, something occurred to her, and her gaze dimmed. She asked tentatively, "Ms. Larkin, did you know that Sterling..."
Elena froze for a second before finishing her thought. "I know. When he carried Lydia away, he was standing right on the other side of this door."
Lorelei was instantly horrified. "What? Sterling knew you were in there, and he didn't even let you out before running off with Lydia? And he left you alone all afternoon and still hasn't come back?"
"He's your boyfriend, how could he do that? Ugh, men really are all trash!"
Listening to her rant, Elena didn't know whether to laugh or cry. She couldn't exactly explain that Sterling wasn't actually her boyfriend.
"No! If Lydia can use a guilt trip, so can you!"
Suddenly, an idea sparked in Lorelei's mind, and she completely revived. "Ms. Larkin, just wait here. I'm going to drag Sterling here and make him grovel for forgiveness!"
"You've been trapped in here for so long. If he cares about you even a little bit, he'll feel incredibly guilty and his heart will ache for you!"
Hearing this, Elena was stunned for a moment before letting out a soft laugh. "He won't. His heart won't ache for me."
Then, she adopted a deadly serious tone. "Lorelei, don't make an enemy out of Lydia anymore; it's going to backfire on you. Also, my relationship with Sterling isn't what you think it is. We could break up at any moment, do you understand?"
Outside the door, Lorelei went silent for a few seconds.
"Honestly, I don't even want to target her."
After a long pause, she murmured a quiet confession. "It's because of Sasha. Everyone knows Sterling likes Lydia, yet she rejects him time and time again. A friend of mine... had a little crush on Sterling. She figured since Lydia didn't want him, maybe she could try confessing her feelings."
"But before she even got the chance, Sasha found out and cornered her with a group of people. She wasn't brave enough to fight back like you did, and she was bullied mercilessly... Later, she was forced to transfer schools and spiraled into severe depression. She ended up having to go abroad for treatment."
"Ms. Larkin, do you really think Lydia is innocent in all of this? Is it possible she had no idea what Sasha was doing? Or maybe... she just hides it perfectly, letting Sasha play the villain so she can stay a flawless, untainted angel."
Elena lowered her eyes, at a loss for words.
