The darkness magnified the terror in her heart. A cold chill crept up Elena's spine as she scrambled backward in a panic.
The next second, her foot caught on something unseen, and she slipped, nearly crashing to the floor.
"Careful, babe. If you fall... my heart will ache for you."
Xavier closed the distance with a predatory stride, reaching out to grab her.
In a split second of agility, Elena ducked beneath his arm and sprinted toward the door.
She gripped the handle, pulling the door open just a crack, and caught a fleeting glimpse of the hallway light.
"Bang—"
She had been so close to escaping the abandoned room.
From behind, the man casually stretched out a long leg, slamming the door shut with ease.
"Babe, you really don't understand men, do you?"
He scoffed darkly, his powerful arms wrapping around her waist from behind.
Then, he thrust his knee forward, forcefully parting her legs and pinning her against the freezing door. "Babe, we're already here. Did you really think... you could run?"
She had managed to run away from him in the past, but only because... his guard was completely down.
It just went to show that women were completely untrustworthy!
The girl from his past had been, and Elena was no different.
The second he opened his heart, they blindsided him with betrayal.
That last betrayal had nearly killed him; he would absolutely never let it happen again!
Realizing her escape had failed and she was pinned tight against him, Elena stopped fighting.
Calculating the time, Lorelei could return at any minute. She had to stall.
"Mr. Hawthorne, I don't know what you mean. Why would I run?"
She lowered her eyes, answering his question with one of her own.
