Sterling couldn't help but wonder if bringing his "girlfriend" home had suddenly triggered Xavier.
Otherwise, Xavier wouldn't be deluding himself like this!
A breakup wasn't a divorce. His unilateral refusal to accept it didn't change a thing.
Besides, the girl had vanished without a trace after dumping him. It was obvious how determined she was!
Keeping those thoughts to himself, Sterling played along. "Right, right. She's still your girlfriend. When you finally find her, I definitely need to see what kind of goddess managed to make the great Xavier Hawthorne settle down!"
Xavier parted his lips to speak, but he didn't even know where to begin.
Was he supposed to tell his younger brother that the girlfriend he brought home was the exact same woman he was searching for?
"Fuck!"
He suddenly cursed, his tone turning ice-cold in denial. "Who the hell is settling down? A heartless woman like her doesn't deserve it!"
Sterling was speechless.
He thought back to the man who had quit smoking overnight just because his ex-girlfriend said she hated the smell of cigarettes.
*Tsk.* Xavier's mouth was the most stubborn thing about him. No wonder his girlfriend ran away!
Even though Sterling hadn't been in a real relationship yet, he figured he should use Xavier as a cautionary tale.
"By the way, Xavier, what did you want to talk to me about?"
Breaking the silence, Sterling brought the conversation back to business.
Xavier had only used that as an excuse, so the sudden question caught him off guard.
After racking his brain, he steered the topic back to Elena.
"Sterls, this is your first relationship, and I really shouldn't be raining on your parade. But this girlfriend of yours might not be as perfect as you think."
Xavier meant every word from the bottom of his heart.
It was true that when he and Elena were dating, he had pretended to be a broke college student.
Elena hadn't looked down on him; she had even paid for his living expenses.
Xavier's chest tightened as he reiterated with heavy emphasis. "And there is absolutely nothing wrong with my head! I have plenty of women throwing themselves at me. I don't need her!"
What a wonderful brother he had!
Always knowing exactly where to twist the knife!
Just then, his phone rang. The caller ID read "Lawrence."
"Whatever. Go to sleep. I'm going out to take Lawrence's call."
Xavier snapped irritably, turning on his heel and marching out.
"Oh, crap! Xavier, your mood is so terrible, you definitely affected Tristan again!"
Watching him walk away, Sterling's face was a picture of helplessness.
Xavier and Tristan were twins, but they didn't look much alike, and their personalities were worlds apart!
If Xavier was a raging playboy with a never-ending revolving door of women...
