The moment the call disconnected, the smile dropped from Simon's face. He looked at Clara, his tone turning serious.
"Clara, you can hide this for a while, but not forever. Eventually, you'll start showing, or you'll leave. You'll have to give your family an explanation sooner or later."
"I know."
Clara wiped away her tears and took a bite of her cake.
"Once the divorce papers are finalized, I'll go back and tell them. Whatever judgment comes my way, I'll accept it."
Noah looked at Simon, his expression shifting slightly. "You two are very close."
"Obviously." Simon crossed his legs, blinking back the redness in his eyes. "We've been friends since we were in diapers. Anyone who wants to bully Clara has to step over my dead body first."
Noah offered a polite smile but said nothing.
It was past nine in the evening when Noah stood up to leave.
Simon walked him to the elevator, muttering something under his breath.
Suddenly, Clara's phone lit up with a text message.
In this day and age, aside from spam and promotional offers, hardly anyone sent SMS messages anymore.
Clara opened it. It was from a virtual number.
[I heard you lost the baby. You did it on purpose, didn't you?]
[Did you think guilt would bind a husband who doesn't love you? Clara, you really are pathetic.]
Clara stared at the message for a long time.
She didn't know who sent it.
But the tone—innocent on the surface, venomous underneath—was exactly like Margot.
It made sense. Rhys would have undoubtedly updated Veronica West on the situation.
Margot knew about the miscarriage. Right now, she was probably laughing in secret, seizing the chance to humiliate her.
The word "pathetic" was chosen with surgical precision.
Clara took a screenshot and sent it to Daniel, then blocked the number.
There was no need for a confrontation.
Rhys wouldn't believe her anyway.
"Clara, what are you looking at?"
Simon pushed the door open and leaned in to peek at her screen.
Clara locked the phone and placed it face down on the table. "Nothing. Just spam. Someone trying to sell me a grave plot or something."
