The Officer's Runaway Wife & Secret Son novel Chapter 149

Margot stared at the screen, her eyes darting nervously.

"Rhys, what are you talking about? Why would I send something like that? Clara might not like me, but I've always..."

"Margot, tell the truth."

Rhys cut her off. "I taught you that if you're going to do something, be thorough. You didn't learn a thing."

Margot lowered her head, staying silent for a long moment.

She had maintained that timid, fearful posture for years.

"I didn't think she'd show you."

Suddenly, Margot let go of the blanket. She leaned back against the headboard, dropping the act of being short of breath.

"Yeah, I sent them."

She said it like it was nothing.

Even though he had mentally prepared himself, hearing the words come out of her mouth made his heart constrict.

Even downstairs just moments ago, he had been wondering if Veronica West had told her something, if his mother's prejudice had misled her.

He looked at the familiar face in front of him and asked hoarsely, "Why? Clara is already in enough pain. Why would you try to provoke her?"

"What pain?"

Margot smiled at him. "The baby's gone, so what? She doesn't want you anyway. Maybe she didn't want the baby either. I was helping you see her true colors."

She tilted her head, her tone frighteningly innocent. "Since she wants to leave, let her leave completely. Save her from using a dead kid to cling to you later."

"Margot!"

"What? Rhys, why are you so angry?" Margot beamed. "Do you know how I felt when you and Clara started dating?"

Rhys couldn't comprehend her logic. "What does that have to do with me dating Clara?"

"Because she wanted to steal you."

"Clara and I are husband and wife. You are my sister. Those two roles never conflict. You're imagining things."

He had always thought Margot's dependence on him stemmed from the insecurity caused by her poor health.

Especially after returning from abroad, that traumatic experience had made her sensitive and fragile, needing family support.

He had interpreted that dependence as family affection, as responsibility.

He never imagined it had twisted into something so grotesque.

"So... when Clara said you were targeting her, that you were acting... it was all true?"

"Yes."

Since the mask was off, Margot didn't bother pretending anymore. she looked up and sighed.

"I asked for that bracelet on purpose. I said I liked that brand of ring on purpose. The 'good meaning' behind it? I just made that up."

Rhys's face turned ashen. "The sickness? Was that fake too?"

"Sometimes it really hurts, sometimes I fake it. But does it matter? I just didn't want you to be with her."
