That one sentence sent Clara's tears spiraling out of control again.
She lowered her head, afraid to look at her father's face.
Her father laughed at her. "Look at you, an adult, still such a crybaby."
"You old fool, you don't know anything," her mother snapped at him, glaring. She pressed Clara down onto the sofa and pulled out several tissues to wipe her face. "She's pregnant, her hormones are unstable. So what if she cries a little? Does she have to hold it back in her own home?"
Her father said, "Alright, alright. It's fine to have the baby. We can afford to raise a baby, Clara."
No interrogation, no blame, no forcing her to get an abortion, and not a single sentence about "staying together for the kids."
Clara covered her face and nodded vigorously.
Once her emotions had settled a bit, her father asked, "Who else knows about this?"
Clara answered, "Simon knows. Emily, who took me to the hospital, knows. And... a doctor friend who helped me cover it up."
"A doctor? Is he reliable?"
"Yes, a former schoolmate. He altered the medical records for me."
Her father frowned slightly, then nodded after a moment. "If you're ending this, then end it completely. Not a word gets out to the Huntington family, especially that aunt of his."
The convoluted politics of wealthy families were foreign to the elderly couple, but they knew enough from stories to be wary.
If the child were gone, it would just be Clara's personal tragedy.
But if the child was here, that was the fourth-generation heir of the Huntington family.
Given how things had ended, if Old Mr. Huntington found out, with the family's immense power, Clara wouldn't just lose custody—she might have to beg just to see her own child.
"I've blocked them," Clara said. "I've cut off all methods of contact."
With the matter settled, her mother, aching for her daughter, wanted her to move back home.
Clara refused.
Although she had signed the papers, during these thirty days before getting the certificate, if Rhys decided to look for her, he would come here first.
