The Officer's Runaway Wife & Secret Son novel Chapter 156

"You guys go back inside. No need to see me out! I... I'm heading off too!"

Clara helped him change his shoes in the foyer, then grabbed his car keys. "Alright, stop trying to be a hero. I'm driving."

"Can you handle it?" Clara's mom looked at her belly with concern.

"It's fine, Mom. His car is easy to drive. I'll just take it slow."

After saying goodbye to her parents, Clara drove toward Shady Lane.

First, get home. Then I'll order a rideshare for this idiot.

Simon was slumped in the passenger seat, humming a tune under his breath.

"Clara," he suddenly turned his head, looking at her with bleary, drunken eyes. "Are you really sure about this? Keeping the baby and ditching the father?"

"I'm sure."

"Later on... when the kid has a fever in the middle of the night, you'll have to run to the hospital alone. Parent-teacher conferences... everyone else will have a dad there, but your kid won't. Aren't you scared?"

Clara pursed her lips.

Actually, she was terrified.

She had searched countless threads about single mothers online, and they all revolved around midnight breakdowns and helplessness.

"Being scared doesn't change anything." Clara glanced at him sideways. "What's the difference between being a single mom and being married to a guy who's never really there? At least now, I don't have to wait on a man-child anymore."

"Right! Cool!"

Simon gave a thumbs up, though it was unclear if he had actually processed her words.

"Clara, you're a badass! You be the single mom, and I'll be... the single Godfather! We've got money, we've got love—the kid will grow up just fine! We're going to build an empire!"

Clara laughed at his antics. "Straighten out your tongue before you try to make a speech."

When they arrived downstairs, Clara parked the car and went around to drag Simon out.

He was over six feet tall and dead weight when drunk. Clara didn't dare use too much force for fear of straining her belly, so it took a lot of effort just to prop him up.

Before they even reached the building entrance, the motion-sensor light flickered on.

Someone pushed the door open from the inside.

Clara was busy struggling with Simon and didn't look where she was going, nearly crashing into the person.
