Heron Bay entered November, and Clara was ten days away from her due date.
Clara felt fine, but Simon was losing his mind.
He dumped his workload onto Alex and stayed at the house every day to supervise. Alex, to his credit, was obedient in front of Simon and managed the company well enough in his absence.
"Twenty-four minutes and thirty-two seconds!"
Simon clicked the stopwatch, sticking his head out of the car window and shouting at Clara's dad, who was pruning flower branches. "I just clocked the drive again! Twenty-four minutes! That's ten minutes over my last run. This is a disaster. We're moving way too slow!"
Clara's dad, startled by the shout, twitched his hand and accidentally beheaded a blooming pink rose. Clara's dad looked at the flower with heartache and sighed helplessly. "Simon, twenty minutes is plenty of time. Besides, you're driving during rush hour."
"Mr. Bridges, the baby isn't going to pick a convenient time!"
Clara was laughing and crying at the same time. "I'm having a baby, Simon, not diffusing a bomb."
"Zip it! The person involved has no right to speak!" Simon turned to glare at her. "Childbirth is like walking through the gates of hell. I'm Felix's godfather; it's my responsibility to ensure nothing goes wrong!" He paused, glancing toward the kitchen where Noah was helping Clara's mom. "If he can't make it that day and something happens, I won't be able to live with myself."
Clara followed his gaze. Noah was looking down, slicing fruit. He said something to Clara's mom, who laughed so hard she couldn't close her mouth. Since the night they had cleared the air, Noah had been coming to Heron Bay even more frequently. It was a mystery where he found so much time off, using every spare moment to help Clara with prenatal yoga and patiently teaching her parents how to identify signs of labor.
Although Emily didn't visit, she sent a mountain of baby clothes and toys. Rumor had it she had set her sights on a new man and declared she would bring him to Heron Bay to show off once she'd secured him.
