Noah quietly filled the gaps in her life, acting as the anchor that held her steady whenever her world began to splinter. He never claimed credit, nor did he say much. But deep down, Clara knew this wasn't right. She shouldn't accept it, and she certainly didn't deserve it.
She was a divorced woman, pregnant with her ex-husband's child. All her pride and self-esteem had been pulverized in her previous marriage. Even pieced back together now, the cracks remained visible.
And Noah? He was a man of pristine reputation, from a prominent family, with a limitless future ahead of him. He should be basking in admiration, or clinking glasses with debutantes at some high-society gala. Why waste his time and energy on her?
"You don't have to go this far," Clara said, lowering her gaze to avoid his eyes. "It's not fair to you, and it's too much of a burden."
Noah was silent for a moment. "Clara, a doctor doesn't need a reason to save someone, and a friend doesn't need a reason to help."
He sat at the foot of the bed. "I know what you're afraid of. You're afraid of owing a debt you can't repay, and afraid that reliance will turn into something you can't take back."
Clara didn't dare respond. He was too sharp; he had easily seen through her careful avoidance and deep-seated insecurity.
"I remember telling you not to feel burdened," Noah said, looking at her. "I'm not here to replace anyone, nor am I asking for a place in your life. You can think of me as a pilot for this part of your journey. When you and Felix are safely docked, if you feel you no longer need me, I can disembark at any time and return to where I was."
He smiled helplessly. "I intended to wait until you were feeling better to say this, but it seems your mind is racing too fast. Overthinking isn't good for the pregnancy."
Director Sterling had mentioned that this was a crucial infection screening for the third trimester. Many expectant mothers got nervous, and since Clara had tendencies toward prenatal depression, extra care was needed. She was terrified tonight; she would only be more panicked next week.
Noah thought for a moment, then tapped "Cancel Trip." He sent a message to a colleague at the hospital to arrange coverage for his shift. After hitting send, he placed his phone face down next to him and closed his eyes.
She was too sensitive.
If he wasn't there to watch over her, how could he possibly be at ease?
