The Officer's Runaway Wife & Secret Son novel Chapter 243

During the surveillance operation, Rhys used his downtime to learn everything there was to know about that kindergarten.

He knew which teacher was in charge of which class and exactly what time the school bus stopped.

On the afternoon of the third day, he made a detour back to his temporary quarters.

He shaved his stubble and dug out a light grey T-shirt from the bottom of his duffel bag—a shirt he rarely wore.

The color was less severe, less intimidating than his usual black.

Before leaving, he doubled back to check the mirror one last time.

He brushed his bangs down, ensuring the scar on his brow bone was well-hidden, before he dared to step out.

He was going to a meeting that was four years overdue, even if the other party didn't know it.

At 4:30 PM, the dismissal bell rang.

Rhys didn't even have to search.

Among the crowd of toddlers, that child stood out distinctly.

He was wearing a small backpack, standing quietly in his designated spot beside the teacher. He wasn't crying or running around. He simply took a 3x3 Rubik's Cube out of his pocket.

His hands were tiny, but he turned the cube with surprising speed. His fingers flicked the colored blocks adeptly, his brow furrowed slightly, as if calculating the next algorithm.

When you looked closely, the resemblance was undeniable.

The contour of his eyes, the way he unconsciously pursed his lips when thinking, and especially that serious, stone-faced expression.

Rhys felt he didn't even need a DNA test.

This was his and Clara's child.

He grew up so well. So healthy, so smart, and so... like him.

Rhys's eyes grew hot. His grip on the steering wheel tightened, his palms slick with sweat.
