But Felix took a step back, hiding his hands behind his back.
"I'm not eating that."
Rhys kept his hand extended. "You missed out last time. Aren't you hungry?"
"Mom said I'm not allowed to eat food from strangers."
Rhys paused, a bitter taste spreading in his mouth. "W-we, aren't exactly strangers. We've met. I even saved you, remember? I took your medical payment."
"Even if we've met, it doesn't count."
Felix looked at him dead-on. "Sir, are you trying to kidnap me? I don't have any money, and I don't have a phone. The books say children's organs aren't fully developed yet, so they aren't worth much money. Besides, there are surveillance cameras everywhere here. If you grab me, you won't get away."
Rhys was struck dumb, a heaviness hitting his chest.
He looked at this little bean sprout who barely reached his knee. He wanted to laugh, but the sadness was overwhelming.
That was his son.
He wasn't even four. While other kids were clamoring for toys or candy, he was preoccupied with organ harvesting and mapping out security cameras
He didn't know whether to praise his intelligence or despair at how well Clara had taught him—so well that he left no opening for anyone to get close.
"I'm not kidnapping you." Rhys withdrew the box and placed it on a nearby stone bollard, feeling helpless. "I just... thought you looked a lot like a boy I used to know."
Felix didn't reply.
He'd read that pick-up line in books a dozen times. Zero creativity.
He pulled a carton of milk from the side pocket of his backpack, pierced it with a straw, and took a sip, looking toward the intersection and ignoring Rhys.
He was being frozen out, met with a wall of icy indifference. But Rhys couldn't bring himself to turn away.
He remained crouched there, watching that small face. It was a scene he hadn't even dared to hope for in his dreams.
"Where is your dad? Why hasn't he come to pick you up?"
The question slipped out before his brain could filter it.
The moment the words were in the air, Rhys's heart began to race violently.
He knew this was dangerous territory.
