The Officer's Runaway Wife & Secret Son novel Chapter 246

“That’s good, then.”

Noah spoke again, “Since you’re here on assignment, I wish you a speedy resolution. Get back to Brighton City, get promoted, and make your fortune.”

He paused, his gaze darkening slightly.

“The scenery here is beautiful, but some things... once you miss them, they’re gone for good. Clara has had a hard time walking out of the shadows of the past. Her life is peaceful now. I imagine you wouldn’t want to see her in pain again, would you?”

Rhys nodded but said nothing.

Noah walked away.

On the stone bollard, the box of takeaway had gone stone cold, much like Rhys’s heart in that moment.

He stood rooted to the spot, watching the taillights disappear into the distance, not moving for a long time.

Only when a gust of wind swept past did Rhys force a self-mocking smile. He raised a hand and dug his fingers hard into the itching scar on his brow bone.

It hurt.

It hurt more than the explosion all those years ago.

...

Felix sat in his car seat, looking back.

Only when the gray figure had completely vanished did he turn his head.

“Daddy Noah, that gentleman seemed very sad.”

Noah glanced in the rearview mirror and spoke calmly. “Hmm? Do you know that gentleman?”

“No.”

A child’s intuition is always the sharpest.

Even though Rhys hadn’t said a word and had only smiled at him, little Felix sensed the overwhelming sadness.

Noah sighed softly. “That gentleman is a police officer. He’s on a mission. Maybe he’s just tired from work, or maybe he’s homesick.”

“Oh.” The little guy nodded thoughtfully. “Then I should have been nicer to him just now. Police officers work hard. They are heroes.”

Noah smiled. “Everyone makes their own choices, Felix.”

Some people choose to be heroes, which means being prepared to sacrifice everything.

Approaching Harbor Loop, Noah watched the road ahead, his heart far less calm than his expression suggested.

Rhys’s appearance was a variable he hadn’t accounted for.

Noah knew Clara better than anyone.
