Daniel, on the other hand, looked outwardly calm but could barely suppress the corner of his lip. He pulled a gift box from his pocket and stuffed it into Felix’s jacket pocket.
“Good boy.”
Just as Clara was about to decline, Daniel bent down and whispered to Emily, “I have something to take care of. I might not make it back for dinner, so don’t wait for me.”
Emily was busy playing with Felix and impatiently waved him off.
Daniel left the hotel and went to "The Luminous Grove".
It was an exclusive, private kitchen restaurant, quite far from The Royal Crest Hotel.
He knew the way well and entered the private room. Someone was already sitting inside.
Rhys turned his head. “You’re here.”
“Yeah. Just got them settled.”
Rhys looked up. There were dark circles under his eyes. Since seeing Clara again, his insomnia had returned.
“How are they?”
“Good.” Daniel had some water, his tone flat. “Better than the last time I saw her. She smiles more, she’s more confident. Like I said before, leaving you was the right choice for her.”
Rhys smiled bitterly. “I know. You don’t have to remind me every time we meet.”
Four years ago in the ICU, Daniel had been the first person to visit him besides his aunt, Mia.
At the time, Rhys struggled even to speak.
Seeing him in that state, Daniel understood why Rhys was in such a rush to make a will.
He truly thought he wasn’t going to live long.
So Daniel personally redrafted the will and even brought in a notary to video record the process.
From that moment on, the two men, who originally only had a professional relationship, developed an inexplicable tacit understanding.
“What about the child?” Rhys asked.
Daniel put down his glass and looked at him. “He’s here too.”
Rhys let out a hum, lowered his eyes, and said nothing more.
The dishes were served, but neither of them ate much.
“I’m leaving after we eat,” Daniel said. “If Emily finds out I came to see you tonight, I probably won’t need to show up for the wedding.”
“Thanks,” Rhys said quietly.
“Don’t thank me. I’m just fulfilling a lawyer’s duty of confidentiality.”
