They were leaving for Brighton City on September 30th.
Alex didn’t go this time, staying behind at Heron Bay with Clara’s parents.
The elderly couple was getting on in years and didn’t want the hassle of travel, simply instructing Clara to deliver their gift.
It was Felix’s first time on a plane. He woke up earlier than he usually did for preschool, practically buzzing with excitement. He finally looked like a proper child.
That burst of energy finally ran out an hour after takeoff, and he fell asleep curled up in the cabin seat.
Noah asked the flight attendant for a blanket to cover him.
“He’s sleeping so soundly,” he laughed softly. “Rare to see him this happy.”
Clara glanced at the child, then turned her gaze to the window. “He probably just finds it all new.”
The plane cut through the clouds; below was a vast expanse of white.
The closer they got to Brighton City, the heavier her heart beat.
The feeling was hard to describe.
After the Old Docks case made the news, Clara realized just how dangerous Rhys’s work was these days.
When she left, she had been in so much pain she never wanted to look back. Now that she was returning, the pain had faded, leaving only an indescribable stagnation.
Perhaps this was what people meant when they said things change and people are no longer the same.
A warm hand covered hers. Clara turned back to meet Noah’s gentle eyes.
“Don’t be afraid. We’re only staying for three days.”
“I’m not afraid.” She lowered her eyes. “It just feels... a bit strange.”
Simon poked his head out from the other side of Felix. “Clara, look on the bright side. We’re returning in glory, not going back to beg for scraps.”
Clara smiled. “True.”
They landed in Brighton City at two in the afternoon.
The autumn wind here was very different from Heron Bay—dry and biting.
Felix woke up, rubbing his eyes against Noah’s shoulder.
Clara put his hat on for him and zipped up his jacket.
Seeing that there was indeed no snow, the little guy was still a bit disappointed.
The group took the VIP channel. The car Emily arranged was already waiting at the exit.
“You said there was snow,” Felix said with a straight face. “Outside is gray.”
“I said there is snow, but I didn’t say there is snow right now.” Emily pinched his cheek. “Next time you come in winter, I’ll personally pick you up to see the snow, okay?”
Felix had always liked Emily, so he tried to keep a stern face as he said, “Mommy says lying is wrong. But since you’re the bride, I’ll forgive you this time.”
Everyone in the room burst out laughing.
Daniel arrived shortly after.
He entered, looked around, and greeted everyone one by one.
Clara said, “Thank you for arranging all this.”
“It’s the least I could do,” Daniel said calmly. “If you need anything, just say the word. Don’t be polite.”
Seeing Emily holding Felix, he walked over. His gaze fell on the small face that looked increasingly like a certain someone, and his eyes shifted slightly.
He patted the child’s head. “ grown taller.”
Felix looked up.
Before, he had always called Daniel "Mr. Daniel." Today, his eyes darted around, and he opened his mouth to chirp, “Godfather!” making Emily blush bright red.
