Felix glanced at the chubby little boy next to him, who was busy fiddling with his smartwatch.

"Who are you messaging?" Clara asked.

Without looking up, Felix’s fingers flew across the tiny screen. "I'm checking what time Uncle Simon gets off work today."

Clara didn't think much of it and closed her eyes to rest.

When it was Clara's turn for the blood draw, Felix suddenly reached out with his small hands and covered her eyes.

"Don't be scared, Mommy."

Clara paused, her eyelashes brushing against her son's palms.

“If I cover your eyes, you won’t have to watch. It’ll be over fast.” Felix whispered into her ear. "Daddy Noah always did this when he took me for my shots. I'll protect you, too."

The needle pierced her skin, causing only a slight pinch.

"All done," the nurse said, withdrawing the needle and applying a cotton swab.

Only then did Felix let go, his face tense with concern.

Waiting for the results felt longer than the blood draw itself.

Clara found a quiet spot to sit with Felix.

"Mommy, do you need to throw up?" Felix pulled a packet of tissues from his small backpack, holding them ready in his hand.

"No, I'm okay." Clara reached out to steady his fidgeting body. "If you're tired, just lean on Mommy and sleep for a bit."

"I'm not sleepy," Felix shook his head.

He had gone to bed late and woken up early, so he was actually quite tired. But he had something on his mind.

The image of that gentleman holding the umbrella for his mother yesterday kept playing in his head. Even though the umbrella was huge, he had seen that the man’s shoulder was soaked just to keep his mother dry.

Mommy definitely got sick because she got caught in the rain then.

Even though that gentleman wasn't bad—he had saved Felix and bought him treats—the moment he appeared, Mommy got sick.
