The Officer's Runaway Wife & Secret Son novel Chapter 277

After waiting another twenty minutes, Simon retrieved the lab report from the machine and went to speak with the doctor. He returned looking much more relaxed.

"It's good news. It's just a viral infection. The doctor said there's no need for an IV drip. You just need to go home, take some medicine, and get plenty of sleep."

Clara let out a sigh of relief.

She hated being hooked up to an IV; sitting there for hours always made her back and hips ache.

"Let's go home then." She braced her hands on her knees to stand, but swayed slightly.

Simon immediately caught her arm, looking annoyed. "If I'd known, I wouldn't have encouraged you to get in Rhys's car. That man is bad luck for you. Look at this—you haven't been seriously ill in four years, but the moment you see him, you get a fever."

Hearing that name, Clara instinctively glanced at Felix beside her.

The little guy was looking down, fiddling with his backpack straps, seemingly reacting to the name not at all.

Relieved, Clara took his hand and led him toward the exit.

On the drive back, she stared out the window.

Heron Bay was beautiful in October. Harbor Loop was lined with Royal Poinciana trees. Although the flowering season had passed, the lush green canopies stretched out under the sunlight, heavy with seed pods and full of life.

Simon glanced at her through the rearview mirror.

"Clara, don't overthink things. We're just going to live a good life here in Heron Bay. No one is going to get in our way."

Clara murmured a soft affirmation.

When they got home, Clara's mother, knowing she had a fever, had prepared some nourishing porridge.

After eating and taking her medicine, Clara went upstairs and fell asleep almost immediately.

She slept much better than the night before. When she woke up, it was already evening.

Clara stirred, realizing she was covered in sweat, though her forehead didn't feel as hot anymore.

She sat up and saw Felix hunched over the small table by the bed, clutching a marker and drawing.

Hearing movement, he immediately put down the pen and leaned in. "Mommy, does it still hurt?"

Clara reached out and touched his cheek. "No, not anymore. What are you drawing?"

Felix brought the papers over to show her. There were two of them.

The first one depicted a blue sea and a white house—their home.

In front of the house stood three stick figures.
