The Officer's Runaway Wife & Secret Son novel Chapter 290

Felix pursed his lips again, waiting a moment before speaking. "Then you have to stay inside the house. Don't go wandering around outside."

Noah looked at him, confused. "Why can't I go outside?"

Felix didn't answer.

He had promised his mom he wouldn't look for that man anymore, but the man had been to Heron Bay.

What if Daddy Noah went out and ran into him?

A child's logic was always beautifully simple.

His mom didn't like the man, and the man made his mom cry. So, if he just hid everyone inside the house where no one could see anyone, everything would be fine.

"Because it's hot outside," Felix finally blurted out, grasping for an excuse. "You'll get a sunburn."

Noah chuckled, ruffling the boy's hair. "Alright, you're the boss. I won't go anywhere. I'll stay right indoors."

...

At the exact same time, on Southbank Road.

This was the oldest district in Heron Bay. Outside an unassuming roadside food stall, a few folding tables were set up on the sidewalk.

Rhys held a disposable plastic cup filled with draft beer. Sitting across from him was Mitchell.

Mitchell had just gotten off a shift and was still in uniform. Because of him, the surrounding tables were completely empty; no one dared to sit too close to a cop.

With his hat resting on the edge of the table, he was loudly slurping down a bowl of spicy noodles.

"What the hell are you actually doing here?"

Mitchell finally looked up, wiping red chili oil from his mouth. "You finally get some time off, and you fly all the way to Heron Bay just to sweat?"

"Brighton City is too cold. I wanted to catch some sun," Rhys said mildly.

Mitchell laughed. "Cut the crap. Who was it that skipped his own commendation banquet after closing that massive case? I honestly thought you'd never step foot in Heron Bay again."

Rhys didn't take the bait. He turned his head, gazing down the street toward a corner stationary store.

Colorful balloons bobbed by the entrance as a few grade-schoolers picked out stickers.
