Felix paused, then added the last part of his wish in his head:

*I hope his injury gets better soon, and he doesn't have to stand outside all by himself anymore.*

He opened his eyes, puffed up his cheeks, and blew out the candles in one breath.

Emily Lane set off a party popper with a loud *bang*, showering Felix in a flutter of colorful streamers.

Felix frowned, trying to pick the ribbons out of his hair, and Clara laughed as she helped him.

Daniel Reed stood at the edge of the crowd, not joining in the revelry.

He took out his phone and snapped a picture of the scene.

In the photo, Felix was squinting one eye to avoid the streamers while Clara leaned in to kiss his cheek.

Emily sidled up to him. "What are you sending?"

Daniel put his phone away. "When you take a job, you have to deliver a report."

Emily cursed at him. "Looks like you're sleeping on the couch tonight."

Daniel just smiled. Even a man on death row gets a last meal.

Felix held the knife and served the first piece to Clara, the second to Noah.

"Here, Daddy Noah," Felix said, standing on his tiptoes to hand him the plate.

Noah squatted down to take it. "Thank you, Felix. So, what did you wish for? Can you whisper it to me?"

Felix blinked and pressed a finger to his lips. "Shh—if you say a wish out loud, it won't come true."

Clara, wiping a smear of cream from the corner of his mouth, asked with a smile, "Not even to family?"

Felix shook his head. "Nope. If I tell, it'll run away."

As he said this, he turned his head, his gaze traveling over the backyard fence. Outside, there were only streetlights and darkness in the distance.

"What are you looking at?"

"Nothing." Felix grabbed Noah's hand. "Daddy Noah, I want the biggest strawberry. Can you get it for me?"

Noah lifted him up and walked toward the fruit platter. "Alright. All the strawberries are yours, and the blueberries are mine."
