Felix's little mouth opened and closed twice, but he held back whatever he was about to say.
Clara knew that look of inner conflict all too well.
He wanted to show concern, but some unspoken agreement forced him to act as if nothing was wrong.
Felix knew this was his father, but out of consideration for her, he had never acknowledged it.
Looking at her son's eyes on the screen, Clara felt like the most despicable person alive.
She was punishing Rhys, but in doing so, she was also robbing her child of the right to know his father's love.
"Felix, your uncle is tired and needs to rest," Clara said, forcing an end to the conversation. "Mommy's going to hang up now. I'll call you back later."
"Wait! But I still want to ask…"
"Be good, Felix. Mommy will be home soon." Steeling herself, Clara pressed the end-call button before he could finish.
Rhys remained frozen, his gaze fixed on the blank screen for a long time.
After a while, he finally lowered his head and stared at the needle in the back of his hand. His voice was hoarse when he spoke.
"Clara, give Felix to me."
Clara's hand, still holding the phone, trembled. She looked at him in disbelief. "…What did you say?"
"I'm saying, if… if you absolutely have to marry Noah, then let me have Felix. You'll have your own children later. Noah will be good to his own kids, but what about Felix then?"
"But I only have Felix. Clara, he's all I have left… I won't get married again, and I won't have any other children…"
The sound of a sharp slap echoed in the room. Clara's palm stung, and her entire body was trembling.
"You bastard, Rhys!"
Tears she had been holding back finally streamed down her face. "On what grounds? What right do you have to bargain with me? What do you think our son is?"
Rhys's head was turned to the side from the force of the blow, but he said nothing.
"You didn't want him back then, and now that you see he's grown up and is a good kid, you want him back just because ‘he's all you have left'?"
The more Clara spoke, the angrier she became, her tears flowing uncontrollably. "You don't need to worry about whether Noah will be good to him! Felix is my life. If you want to take my son, you'll have to do it over my dead body!"
After shouting, Clara spun around and stormed out.
