From the cicadas' hum in late summer to the falling leaves of deep autumn, Clara's body grew heavier as her pregnancy advanced, and her checkups became far more frequent.
Family members weren't allowed inside the examination rooms, so every time Clara pushed the door open with her results in hand, Rhys was always the first thing she saw.
He had made it a habit to wear a mask everywhere to prevent infections. The faint scar trailing across the edge of his eyebrow, combined with those quiet, predatory eyes, made him look undeniably fierce.
Yet this very man was always holding a pastel pink and blue maternity manual, with a soft throw blanket and a thermos prepared for his wife resting on his lap.
"All done?"
Rhys strode over, habitually wrapping an arm around her waist. He took the Ultrasound Scans with his left hand, his eyes scanning the details meticulously.
"What did the doctor say? Is the amniotic fluid still normal? Last time they said the umbilical cord was wrapped around the neck once, what about this time?"
"Everything is perfect, and it unwrapped itself."
Clara hooked her arm through his. As a husband got dragged toward the elevators by his pregnant wife nearby, the man gave Rhys a nod of solidarity in passing.
She couldn't help but tease him. "Director Huntington, I was only in there for twenty minutes. Who were you interrogating for tips this time?"
Rhys zipped up her jacket without a change in expression, speaking with absolute utter seriousness. "I asked how to make chicken soup without it tasting too greasy. Haven't you been complaining about acid reflux these past two days? He said adding a few fresh fig leaves works wonders. I'll look into it this afternoon."
Since Rhys was still in his recovery phase and his immune system wasn't fully up to par with an average person, Clara decided to hold off on hiring outside help until the baby was born.
Rhys had completely volunteered to take over all the cooking duties.
This man, who used to refuse to speak even an extra word, was now willing to spend half the day in the OB-GYN Department corridors consulting strangers on cooking tips just to make sure she ate well.
Clara's heart swelled with a mix of sweet and sour emotions.
In October, Emily smoothly delivered a baby boy, naming him Ezra Reed.
Daniel, a man who worshipped "absolute rationality," bawled his eyes out in the hallway outside the delivery room, completely abandoning his polished image, convinced he had put Emily through sheer torture.
Emily later commented: If he cried like that in a courtroom, the opposing lawyer would start wondering if they had bullied him.
This inadvertently piled all the pressure onto Rhys.
He never said a word, but Clara could feel it.
Ever since Daniel's earth-shattering meltdown, the way Rhys looked at her belly had completely shifted.
Aside from that, Felix celebrated his fifth birthday in November.
Standing in front of five burning candles on his cake, the little guy closed his eyes and made the most important wish of his life.
When Rhys asked what he wished for, Felix shook his head and refused to tell.
Since Clara reminded him that Felix hadn't revealed his wish last year either, Rhys didn't push it.
