The first few times, Clara gently reassured him that everything was fine. By the fourth time, she stared at him through sleep-heavy eyes for a long moment and calmly said, "If you keep this up, I'm checking you into the hospital first."
Rhys knew he was overreacting, but he just couldn't turn it off.
Clara was completely helpless but couldn't bring herself to genuinely scold him.
"Rhys, Dr. Black just said the day before yesterday that you need to maintain adequate sleep and stop burning through your energy. Don't give yourself a nervous breakdown over this."
Rhys crouched down beside her, pressing his ear against her swollen belly. Listening to the occasional movements inside, he said hoarsely, "I can't sleep. Clara, I keep thinking I've missed something, and you're going to end up suffering for it."
He hadn't been there for Felix's birth, and he could never make up for the things that had already happened. Now that he had a second chance, he wished more than anything that he could take the physical pain for her.
Clara ran her fingers through his hair, soothing him. "You've already done an amazing job. Stop being so hard on yourself."
Rhys kissed her belly and let out a soft "Mhm."
Felix, who had been watching the entire exchange, simply couldn't take it anymore.
"Dad, you're being so dramatic. I have experience, don't worry. I'll help you when my sister comes out."
Clara burst into laughter.
The little guy must have had some magic in his words.
In the late hours of Christmas Eve, Clara's water broke.
She had experience this time, so she was significantly calmer.
"Honey."
"Yeah?"
"My water just broke."
Rhys practically launched himself out of bed.
Since they couldn't leave Felix home alone, they woke the little guy up to act as a porter.
The father supported the mother downstairs and into the car, while the son hauled a hospital bag that was almost half his height, his little legs working overtime to keep up with his parents.
On the way to the hospital, Brighton City saw its first snow of the year.
The car's heater was blasting, but Rhys's hands were shaking violently as they gripped the steering wheel.
When he stopped at a red light, he turned and grabbed Clara's hand as it rested on her stomach.
His palms were soaked in cold sweat, and his pulse hammered so hard it felt like it would burst through his skin, as if he were the one about to be consumed by sheer agony.
"Rhys, take a deep breath." Clara wasn't even in severe pain yet, finding herself comforting him instead. "I'm fine, don't panic."
"Okay, I'm not panicking. I'm not panicking. We're almost there."
Once they reached the hospital, everything accelerated into controlled chaos.
After the doctors and nurses checked her dilation, they rushed her straight to the delivery room.
Rhys desperately wanted to go in and be with her. The head nurse almost caved, but several specialists who heard the commotion rushed over and physically blocked him.
Left with no other choice, he could only wait outside, holding Felix.
