I knew I wouldn’t be able to go back inside. I couldn’t hide what he did to my face. It was the opposite side to where my hair was sitting, so I couldn’t even use my hair to hide it. 2

I tried to control my emotions while I was at the party. I didn’t feel like I was going to cry though. I felt like I was going to smash something.

I walked over to the fountain that they had in the garden and I sat on the edge of it, staring at the water.

“That looked and sounded like it really hurt.” A voice came from the dark.

I jumped up quickly and a guy about my age was rounding the corner.

“Who are you?” I asked.

“Nathan. I am not going to come near you, just in case he’s watching. But I think you just got hit because you were talking to my brother.” He said.

“Ezra.” I said.

“Yeah. He’s my big brother.” Nathan said.

“Why aren’t you inside?” I asked.

“Because I hate these damn things. Ezra doesn’t have a mate and at the moment I am next in line to take over if anything happens to him. So I need to come to all these things. Just because he doesn’t have any kids.” Nathan explained.

I sat back down at the fountain and Nathan stayed in the shadows.

“You really are scared that he’s going to come back out.” I said.

“Well, you obviously can’t go back in there. He’ll come out and check on you eventually.”

“Yeah. To make sure that I’m not talking to, flirting with or hooking up with anyone else.” I said.

“You’re a brave woman to take on Alpha Logan.” He said.

“You say it like I had a choice.” I said.

“Right. You didn’t.” He said. “If you don’t mind me saying, you seem too good for him.” Nathan said.

“You don’t know me.” I said.

“That’s true. But you’re talking to me even after you just got belted for talking to another unmated male. That doesn’t seem like a bitch to me.” He said.

“Thanks for saying that. I try not to be.” I said.

“How’d you break your arm?” He asked.

“I fell down the stairs.”

“Oh. That classic excuse.” He said.

“It’s better than talking about the truth.” I said.

“Yeah. I guess so. I never thought of it like that.” He said.

“Well, now you’ve got a different perspective.” I said.

“Yeah. You know, our pack isn’t far from yours. If you ever need any help then you just have to call. Ezra doesn’t turn his back on anyone in need.” Nathan said.

“Don’t have a phone.” I said.

“How can you not have a phone?” He asked.

“Again, something that’s not worth explaining.” I said.

“Alright. Well, if you can get to our pack on your own then you won’t be turned away.” He said.

“I doubt your brother will want that sort of trouble. I’m not worth it.”

“Why would you say

that?”

“Because it’s true. I told you, you don’t know me.” I said.

“I saw you two talking to each other inside. He will help you if you need it.” He said.

“I’m fine. Nothing to worry about.” I said.

“If you say so.” He said.

I stayed out in the garden for a long time. I didn’t want to go back inside with a swollen cheek and it didn’t feel like it was going down at all. But Alpha Logan would come to the large windows of the ballroom or onto the veranda occasionally to make sure that I was still there. And probably to make sure that I was alone.

I wasn’t sure how long I was out there when people started leaving.

I was waiting for Alpha Logan, but he was taking his sweet ass time and I saw Ezra and Nathan walk out.

“I hope that isn’t because of me.” Ezra said, pointing to my cheek.

“It’s not. Don’t worry about it.” I said.

“He has no right to hit you.” Ezra said.

“You better go.” I said, walking away from him, further into the garden.

I couldn’t risk letting Alpha Logan see us two together again. We were just talking inside and he lost his shit.

Ezra stood there for a few minutes talking to his brother and then to some other Alpha’s before Logan finally

came out.
