Ben and I sat in the mess hall together but we got there late so a lot of people were finishing up and they were leaving.
“Lilly. You shouldn’t have to put up with this. It’s the equivalent of living with an abusive parent.” Ben said.
“Ben. Even if I did try to leave, I won’t be able to. They’ll always find me. They will look for me because they’ve invested too much into me.” I said.
“I know somewhere safe where we can go. They’ll never find you there.”
“If you take off with me, then no one you know will be safe. Trust me.”
“No. You need to trust me. Trust me to take care of you.” He said.
“Why do you care so much?” I asked.
“Because I love you and I hate what they are doing to you.” He said.
“It’ll pass. I learnt a long time ago not to complain. Everything always passes.” I said.
“I hope so. Because I don’t want to have to kill the bastard.” He said.
“Well, don’t do that. Because you will just end up in the brig.” I said.
“I know. Listen, another team came back today after going after a pack. It’s the same story. The pack was evacuated. Completely empty.” Ben said.
“How’s that possible?”
“I don’t know. But someone is tipping them off and pretty soon we are all going to be under the microscope. Which means, we have to be more careful than ever.” Ben explained.
“Yeah. Absolutely. As much as I love sneaking out with you, maybe we should give it a rest for a bit.” I said.
“It sounds like a good idea. They’ve got people outside the base to see if there are hideouts anywhere. To see if wolves are watching us.” Ben said.
That made sense. They were trying to figure out why all of these packs were empty.
Ben and I were walking back to the bunk house when I saw Justin standing across the field talking to a few other people. He looked at us but I just looked away and kept walking with Ben.
I had nothing to say to him and I didn’t want him to think it was a good idea to start training right now.
I showered and got ready for bed and Ben was sitting on his bed next to me and Jesse was on the bed on the other side of me.
“How are you going with everything Lilly?” Jesse asked.
“What do you mean?” I asked.
“Justin. He’s being a bit of a dick.” Jesse said.
“I can handle Justin. He’ll get over his problem eventually.” I said.
“Well, he’s definitely pissed at you about something.” Eric said, walking over to us and joining the conversation.
