Chapter 22

“I’m not gonna let you sit out there and freeze.” I said.

“I appreciate it. Is that the pack’s history book?”

“Yeah. I was looking through it at the packhouse and it looked really interesting.” I said.

“I’ve been meaning to read it.” He said.

“Have you ever heard of a treaty between our pack and a clan of vampires?” I asked.

“Yeah. But that’s meant to be an urban legend. No one thinks it’s real.” He said.

“Same as the Alpha. That’s why he’s trying to find out for real.” I said.

“Damn…can I ask you a question?” He asked.

“Sure.” I said.

“Do you ever get lonely?” He asked.

“I used to. But it’s just normal to me now.” I said.

“We all know that your father died saving the Alpha. And then the Alpha family turned their back on you and your mother.” He said. 1

“It happens.” I said.

“It shouldn’t. I was hoping that Alpha Logan would be different from his father. But he’s not.” Ace said.

“That’s because he was raised to be this way. He thinks it’s acceptable. He doesn’t know any different.” I said. 1

“You’re pretty understanding.” He said.

“I don’t want to be. Believe me, if I could leave this pack right now, I would. But I doubt he’ll let that happen.” I

said.

“Probably not. Not if he’s got me watching you all the time.” He said.

“There’s plenty of food in the kitchen if you’re hungry.” I said.

“Thanks.” He said. So he got up and started making something to eat, but he also got me something as well.

“So, why haven’t you told your mother that you’re mated to the Alpha?” He asked.

“Because I don’t know how she’ll take it. His father is the reason that we’re living like this. She might not take it very well knowing that I am mated to his son.” I said.

“You take good care of your mother.” He said.

“Only when she’s home. She’s got about four jobs, last I counted. It might be more now.” I said.

“I’m not the only one who thinks that you got a sucky deal.” He said.

“I know. But no one can stand up to the Alpha.” I said, still reading through the book.

Ace stayed inside until mom came home. We didn’t want to explain what he was doing here. Like I said, I didn’t want mom to know that I was mated to Alpha Logan. At least not yet.

When she got home I made sure that her dinner was ready and she sat down eating it.

“Here. I grabbed the mail.” She said, handing it to me.

I started looking through it and there were several addressed to me. All from colleges that I had applied to.

“What do they say?” Mom asked.

“They’ve all offered me an academic scholarship.” I said.

“Honey, that’s great news.” She said.

“I’ll still have to get a job. This just covers tuition.” I said.

“I know that. But you can handle it. I know you can. You’re the strongest person I know.” Mom said.

“I could say the same about you.” I said.

After we’d both gone to bed that night, I was almost asleep when we heard the sirens going off in the pack.

I jumped up immediately, knowing that we were being attacked. And the woods that we lived in, was the least patrolled area.

Mom came running out of her room and Ace ran in the front door.

“Rogues?” I asked.

“Yeah. They’re coming.” He said.

“Why are you here?” Mom asked.

“Ask questions later mom.” I said, grabbing her hand.

We were about to run for the door when it opened from the outside and a man walked in.

He smelled of rotten eggs and even though he was in human form, we knew that he was a rogue.

He looked at us all but his eyes landed on my mother and he licked his lips.

“Hello Violet.” He said. And I looked at mom.

“Jude.” Mom said, shocked.
